During a phone call with Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed the importance of launching a political process in Lebanon and allowing the country to free itself from foreign influence.
Scholz also expressed solidarity with the Lebanese people.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Scholz said: "It is essential to initiate a political process now. The goals must be the security of Israel's people and the sovereignty of Lebanon, free from any foreign influence."
The statement added that Germany would provide 60 million euros ($64 million) to assist the Lebanese people.
