7 Haziran 2009 Pazar günü yapılan Lübnan parlamento seçimini Batı yanlısı 14 Mart Koalisyonu 71 milletvekili (iki bağımsız milletvekili ile) elde ederek galip olarak tamamladı. Parlamento seçimi öncesi 70 civarında milletvekili kazanacağı beklenen Hizbullah liderliğindeki 8 Mart Koalisyonu ancak 57 milletvekili elde edebildi. Böylece 2005 seçimlerindeki statüko korunmuş oldu. Mişel Aoun’un Ulusal Özgürlük Hareketi’nin Hıristiyan bölgelerinde kendisinden beklenen başarıyı elde edememesi 8 Martçılar için seçimin büyük bir hayal kırıklığıyla sonuçlanmasına yol açtı. Seçimlerden sonra 8 Martçılar için (beklentilerle birlikte düşünüldüğünde) başarısızlık olarak nitelendirilecek bu sonuç, uluslararası kamuoyunda ABD Başkanı Barack Obama’nın Mısır’da Orta Doğu’ya ve Müslüman dünyasına yönelik mesajıyla ilişkilendirilmeye çalışıldı. Hatırlanırsa Obama konuşmasında bölgedeki dini çeşitliliğin bir parçası olarak Marunîler’den bahsetmişti. Bu ilişkilendirme kısmen doğru kabul edilse de Lübnan’daki rakip politik gruplar arasındaki dengeler ve seçmenlerin eğilimlerini belirleyen diğer faktörler göz önüne alınmadan bu iki olay arasında genel bir sebep-sonuç ilişkisinden kaçınmak gerekiyor.
