Israel issues new evacuation order for Choueifat Amroussieh, Haret Hreik residents in Beirut’s southern suburbs - LBC

Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee issued a second warning on Saturday, calling on residents in Beirut’s southern suburbs, particularly those in the marked building in the Choueifat Amrousieh neighborhood and Haret Hreik to evacuate.

"You are located near Hezbollah facilities and interests, which the Israeli army will target in the near future," he claimed.

"For your safety and the safety of your family, you must evacuate this building and the surrounding buildings immediately and move at least 500 meters away."

20 Israeli soldiers killed, wounded in ambush, Hezbollah says - The New Arab

Twenty Israeli soldiers were killed or wounded after attempting to advance towards the Lebanese towns of Maroun al-Ras and Yaroun on Friday afternoon, Hezbollah said in a statement.

The Lebanese group said the Israeli army attempted to advance under artillery cover but were ambushed with explosive devices. The fighters then engaged the army "from close range reaching zero distance".

Soldiers who were killed or wounded were evacuated, while the remaining Israeli force retreated under artillery cover, the statement posted to Telegram said.

The statement also referenced images shared by the Israeli army of a southern Lebanese village which it said it had reached, saying that the Israelis had taken significant casualties to obtain the pictures.

The Israeli army had published images of soldiers in houses and villages where they said they had uncovered Hezbollah munitions.

The Israeli army, which maintains strict censorship over its operations and casualties, has not confirmed Hezbollah's statement.

However, it confirmed nine deaths of soldiers this week on the northern front with Lebanon, including eight killed in one incident.

On Friday, Israel announced that a further two soldiers were killed and 24 others wounded by a drone strike launched from Iraq towards an army base in the occupied Golan Heights.

Israel dramatically increased its attack on Lebanon last month, carrying out devastating strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut and southern and eastern Lebanon.

These have resulted in the killing of many Hezbollah leaders and officials, including secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah.

Now attempting a ground invasion, Israel has come up against stiff resistance from the group, which says it pushed back an Israeli attempt to infiltrate the town of Odaisseh on Wednesday.

Hezbollah: Our position is issued only through official statements from the Media Relations Office - LBC

Hezbollah's Media Relations Office issued a statement denying recent reports by several media outlets that attributed information about the fate of party officials to unnamed sources within Hezbollah following Israeli airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburbs.

In the statement, Hezbollah emphasized, "We do not have any sources within Hezbollah, and our position is issued only through an official statement from the Media Relations Office."

The department also criticized other outlets, particularly some websites, for spreading false news and baseless rumors about the organizational status of senior Hezbollah officials.

It described these reports as part of a psychological warfare campaign aimed at undermining the morale of Hezbollah's supporters, orchestrated by those aligned with the Israeli occupation.

Six days of Israeli ground invasion in South Lebanon: Key developments on the ground -LBC

The Israeli ground invasion into South Lebanon has now entered its sixth day, with the focus of operations and combat primarily concentrated along two main axes.

First, on the eastern front, the Lebanese border towns of Kfarkela and Odaisseh, located opposite the Israeli settlements of Metula and Misgav Am, have become significant flashpoints.

Israeli forces have been attempting to penetrate this area, with recent efforts concentrated around the Odaisseh municipality, where Hezbollah reported repelling two Israeli attempts on Saturday morning.

On the first day of the invasion, the Israeli army acknowledged losing nine soldiers and sustaining dozens of injuries. Images released by the Israeli military, claiming to show the interior of homes in Kfarkela, were refuted by a Hezbollah field commander, who stated that the photos were taken just meters from the border, costing the Israeli forces several casualties.

Meanwhile, the town of Khiam has been subjected to heavy airstrikes and shelling.

The second axis of the Israeli ground offensive is focused on the central sector, specifically around the towns of Yaroun and Maroun El-Ras.

Hezbollah announced it had successfully repelled Israeli forces in the outskirts of these towns, using explosive devices, targeted missile strikes, and engaging in close-range firefights. The town of Bint Jbeil, located behind Yaroun and Maroun El-Ras, is also enduring heavy Israeli bombardment and continuous attacks.

While the Israeli military claims its operations are aimed at dismantling Hezbollah's infrastructure, the group has been striking back with targeted operations behind Israeli lines.

Hezbollah forces have been targeting concentrations of Israeli soldiers and using guided missiles to hit tanks and military positions, benefiting from the deployment of Israeli troops and reinforcements to settlements along the border.

The Israeli ground advance remains limited in scope for now, but attention is turning to how far the invasion will expand and whether Hezbollah will be able to exploit the Israeli military's extended presence inside Lebanon to inflict further damage.

Lebanese resistance targets with missiles Israeli sites near Haifa - SANA

Beirut, SANA -Lebanese National Resistance fired Saturday dozens of missiles targeting Ramat David airbase of Israeli enemy near Haifa city and destroyed a Merkava tank.

The resistance said in a statement that “In support of our steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, their valiant resistance, in defense of Lebanon and its people, and in response to the barbaric Israeli bombing of cities, villages and civilians, our fighters targeted Ramat David airbase at 10:30 am with a salvo of Fadi 1 missiles.”

The resistance fighters targeted with a guided missile an enemy Merkava tank while advancing to Al-Bat Heights, the last of the Maroun Forest in southern Lebanon, killing and injuring its crew.

The resistance fighters also targeted with missiles three gatherings of Israeli soldiers in Khallet Abir in Yaron, Kfar Giladi and Kafryoval.

The resistance announced that its fighters forced Israeli infantry force to retreat after clashing with it when it attempted to advance at dawn today towards the municipality’s vicinity in the town of Adaisseh, killing or injuring the members of the infantry force.

The resistance also thwarted the second attempt by Israeli soldiers to advance towards the municipality’s vicinity in the town of Adaisseh.

Yesterday, the Lebanese resistance targeted 23 Israeli enemy sites, hitting them directly.

Israel expands its bombardment in Lebanon as tens of thousands flee - AP

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel expanded its bombardment in Lebanon on Saturday, hitting Beirut’s southern suburbs with a dozen airstrikes and striking a Palestinian refugee camp deep in northern Lebanon for the first time.

The attack on the Beddawi camp near the northern city of Tripoli killed an official with Hamas’ military wing along with his wife and two young daughters, the Palestinian militant group said in a statement. Hamas later said another member of its military wing was killed in an Israeli strike in Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa Valley.

Israel’s military said it killed two senior officials with Hamas’ military wing in Lebanon, one near Tripoli. Israel has killed several Hamas officials in Lebanon since the Israel-Hamas war began almost a year ago, in addition to most of the top leadership of Hezbollah as the fighting has escalated in Lebanon in recent weeks.

Plumes of smoke dominated the skyline over Beirut’s densely populated southern suburbs, where Hezbollah has a strong presence. Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah commanders and military equipment and aims to drive the militant group away from shared borders.

France's Macron says sales of arms used in Gaza should be halted - The Jerusalem Post

Shipments of arms used in the conflict in Gaza should be stopped as part of a broader effort to find a political solution, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday.

France is not a major weapons provider for Israel, shipping military equipment worth 30 million euros ($33 million) last year, according to the defense ministry's annual arms exports report.

"I think the priority today is to get back to a political solution (and) that arms used to fight in Gaza are halted. France doesn't ship any," Macron told France Inter radio.

"Our priority now is to avoid escalation. The Lebanese people must not, in turn, be sacrificed; Lebanon cannot become another Gaza," he added.

Macron's comments come as his Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot is on a four-day trip to the Middle East, wrapping up on Monday in Israel as Paris looks to play a role in reviving diplomatic efforts.

Hezbollah says more than 20 Israeli soldiers killed, injured in southern Lebanon - AA

Hezbollah announced Friday that more than 20 Israeli elite soldiers were killed or wounded in clashes in a border village in southern Lebanon.

The group said it recorded additional casualties for Israeli forces following heavy rocket fire that targeted a tank and military gatherings in areas near the border.

Hezbollah fighters destroyed an Israeli Merkava tank near the Malikiya post with a guided missile, resulting in the deaths and injuries of the crew, it said.

Additionally, the group launched rocket attacks on the outskirts of Haifa and artillery positions near Kiryat Shmona.

Hezbollah also targeted several Israeli positions, including Rweissat al-Alam in the occupied Kafr Shuba hills, as well as military forces in Karmiel and Sa’sa with heavy missiles and rockets.

The group reported bombarding the Nafah base and soldier gatherings near the al-Baghdadi post in northern Israel.

Rocket fire struck Israeli military positions east of Doviv, the Maroun al-Ras plain and near the settlements of Avivim and Yiron, it said.

Advancing Israeli forces were struck with artillery and rockets west of Yiron, leading to additional casualties.

Hezbollah claimed to have targeted Israeli soldiers attempting to infiltrate the Lebanese village of Maroun al-Ras, causing additional losses through explosives and close-range clashes.

As of late Friday, no official comment had been made by Israel.

IDF pummels Hezbollah, says 400 terror operatives killed since start of ground op - The Times of Israel

The Israel Defense Forces continued its campaign to degrade Hezbollah in Lebanon on Saturday as it targeted command centers, weapons caches, tunnels and more, and as the military said it believed it had killed some 400 Hezbollah operatives since the start of ground operations on Monday.

The army said on Saturday said it had struck Hezbollah operatives overnight in a command center embedded in a mosque in southern Lebanon’s Bint Jbeil, located within the Martyr Salah Ghandour Hospital compound.

According to the military, the operatives were using the command room “to plan and carry out acts of terror against IDF troops and the State of Israel.”

The IDF said the drone strike was “precise” and based on intelligence.

Before carrying out the strike, the IDF said it sent text messages to residents and called up officials in the nearby villages “demanding that all acts of terror carried out at the hospital cease immediately.”

Israel military official says 'preparing response' to Iran attack - Naharnet

An Israeli official told AFP on Saturday that the military is "preparing a response" to the Iranian missile barrage that targeted Israel earlier this week.

"The IDF (Israeli military) is preparing a response to the unprecedented and unlawful Iranian attack on Israeli civilians and Israel," the military official said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak publicly on the issue.

He did not elaborate on the nature or timing of the response.

Israel's left-leaning newspaper Haaretz, quoting the military, reported that the military's response will be "significant."

"The IDF is preparing for a significant strike in Iran following this week's missile attack from Tehran," the newspaper reported.

"The military does not rule out the possibility that Iran may launch missiles at Israeli territory again after the Israeli attack," it added.

On October 1, Iran launched around 200 missiles at Israel, its second direct attack on the country in less than six months.

Most of the missiles were intercepted by Israel's aerial defense system, while some hit military bases but did not cause major damage or casualties.

Iran said the missiles were launched to avenge the assassination of Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah who was killed by an Israeli air strike in the Lebanese capital's suburbs on September 27.

'Know Thyself, Lebanon!' - This is Beirut

“Know thyself.” This timeless Socratic precept, fundamental to any individual in pursuit of wisdom, holds equally true for nations. By disregarding it, Hezbollah’s Secretary-General, Hassan Nasrallah, met his demise. Convinced he had secured full control over the Lebanese state, and by leading Lebanon into a war in support of Hamas on October 8, 2023 – against the consensus of other national factions – Hezbollah invited a swift and overwhelming Israeli retaliation. Its vaunted military assets, including the deterrence of long-range rockets and the threats of Iranian support, ultimately failed to deliver.

The Israeli response, anticipated by the entire world, cost him his life. The repercussions of this operation within the Arab and Islamic world will undoubtedly resonate for generations, potentially imposing a heavy toll on Israel. Nasrallah embodied a messianic aura, largely stemming from his natural charisma and the seamless alignment of his words with his actions. While Israel celebrated his downfall, it remains uncertain whether this act ultimately served it well, as it conferred a martyr’s halo upon an already legendary figure. In death, he joins the ranks of iconic leaders from the last century’s struggle for independence, such as Mahatma Gandhi and Che Guevara, forever etched in the collective imagination.

Internally, however, his death imparts a profound lesson, echoing the assassinations of three prominent leaders during or as a consequence of the Lebanese Civil War: Kamal Jumblatt (1977), Bashir Gemayel (1982) and Rafic Hariri (2005). Each was subsequently elevated to the status of an absolute ideological reference by their supporters.

During his press conference yesterday, MP Michel Moawad wisely reminded us that those in Lebanon who have yielded to the temptation of seeing themselves as the sole decision-makers – viewing themselves as the entirety rather than a part – have often met unfortunate ends. For the historical record, it is important to note that the four martyrs in question represent the four major communities of Lebanon: Druze, Christian (Maronite), Sunni and Shia.

The wave of national solidarity ignited by our misfortune is both genuine and remarkable. However, it does not wipe out the profound divide between the sovereigntist front represented by Moawad, and Hezbollah. Whether weakened or not, the latter must reevaluate its political doctrine and recognize that its ambitions should be confined to the borders established by the Sykes-Picot Agreement for Greater Lebanon. Lebanon has suffered too much to refrain from holding Hezbollah accountable – right away – for the disaster brought upon the country by its attrition warfare.

We were drawn into war divided, and it is unacceptable for us to emerge from it still fractured. This is especially true in light of Israel’s current actions to reshape the country's demographics through bombings, forcibly displacing Shiites from southern Lebanon away from its borders – a “transfer” that must be revisited.

We are free to hold the belief, as Ayatollah Ali Khamenei expressed in his eulogy for Nasrallah during Friday prayers in Tehran, that Israel is an “artificial entity” and that its annihilation is a “religious and legal duty.” However, we are not free to act on this belief. While the Palestinian cause remains sacred, it is no longer acceptable to regard Lebanon as a front, rather than a homeland. And not just any homeland. Once and for all, it must be reiterated that Lebanon is more than just a country. Lebanon is a message of pluralism for both the East and the West, and this pluralism is the core principle that everyone in Lebanon must embrace. As the Socratic precept goes, “Know thyself.”

Israeli aggression on Lebanon continues to kill, injure civilians - Al-Mayadeen

At noon Saturday, an Israeli drone struck an area where Civil Defense and rescue operations attempted to lift the rubble following the intense aggression on Mrayjeh, in Beirut's Southern Suburb, forcing the crews to withdraw from the site immediately, as "Israel" stretches its tactics of obstructing all rescue efforts in Lebanon

Almost 375,000 people have fled Lebanon for Syria in 2 weeks - Naharnet

Not neutral but not fighting: Lebanon’s army walks tightrope on Israeli invasion - MEE

A few days ago, Lebanon’s army commander, General Joseph Aoun, visited Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to discuss how the military will respond to Israel's invasion of southern Lebanon.

There, they reaffirmed the Lebanese political authorities’ long-standing position: Lebanon’s military must not be involved in Israel’s war and battles with Hezbollah.

However, sources close to the military establishment said that this position does not mean that the army will retreat from its positions in the south and move north of the Litani River, some 30km from the Israeli border.

As Israel stepped up its ferocious bombing campaign last week ahead of the ground invasion, Aoun decided to withdraw some of his troops from observation stations along the Blue Line, the quasi-border that separates Lebanon from Israel, where they were exposed to Israel’s line of fire, the sources said.

Yet, the Lebanese army, despite its limited capabilities, will remain in south Lebanon and will respond to Israeli fire on its positions, as it has over the past couple of days.

IDF prepares 'significant' retaliatory strike to Iran's missile barrage - The Jerusalem Post

The IDF on Saturday commented regarding the retaliation against Iran for launching ballistic missiles toward Israel, clarifying that combat is currently ongoing on seven different fronts. Alongside the continued fighting in Gaza and the West Bank, Israeli soldiers and forces are engaged in operations in Lebanon, Iran, and its proxies in Yemen, Syria, and Iraq.

The struggle with Iran is viewed as a direct conflict, and it is expected that the Iranians will be preoccupied with their own affairs rather than just with their proxies in Lebanon, Syria, Gaza, Yemen, and Iraq.

The IDF plans to respond significantly but has not detailed the nature of that response. The IDF noted that the Iranians launched 201 missiles from Iran to Israel, some of which impacted targets.

President al-Assad receives Araqchi: Resistance against all forms of occupation, aggression is legitimate right - SANA

Damascus,SANA,President Bashar al-Assad stressed during his meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and an accompanying delegation the strategic relationship between Syria and Iran and the importance of that relationship in confronting the challenges and dangers that pose threat to the region and its peoples, foremost of which is the continued Israeli occupation of Arab lands and its daily perpetration of crimes of killing and destruction against civilians in Lebanon, Palestine and Syria.

President al-Assad stressed that resistance against all forms of occupation, aggression and mass killing is a legitimate right, and it is strong in light of the popular support and belief in it, considering that the Iranian response to the violations and repeated attacks by the Israeli entity on peoples of the region and the sovereignty of its countries was a strong response, and gave a lesson to this Zionist entity that the axis of resistance is capable of deterring the enemy and thwarting its plans, and that it will remain strong and steadfast thanks to the will and solidarity of its peoples.

His Excellency added that the only solution to the Israeli entity is to stop the crimes of killing and shedding the blood of innocents and to restore legitimate rights to their owners.

In this context, President al-Assad discussed with Minister Araqchi ways to stop the Israeli aggression on brotherly Lebanon, and the importance of providing support and assistance to the Lebanese brothers in light of the large displacement caused by the Israeli aggression.

Minister Araqchi, for his part, stressed confidence in the strength of the resistance in Lebanon and Palestine to stand in the face of the Israeli machine of destruction and killing, stressing the need to coordinate with all countries supporting efforts to stop this aggression.

Elie Barnavi, former Israeli ambassador to France: 'Israel is winning battles but losing the war' - Le Monde

In an article for Le Monde published the day after October 7, 2023, I wrote that this cataclysm was "likely to upset regional balances." An easy prediction. What I couldn't imagine was that, 12 months later, we'd still be here, only worse. Israel now faces seven fronts. Seven fronts! In the south, we're up against Hamas, in the north against Hezbollah, in the east, in the West Bank, against an as yet unnamed intifada, in Syria and Iraq against a myriad of terrorist groups, further afield against the Houthis in Yemen, and finally against Iran, the master of them all. It took a strategic genius to find ourselves in such a bind.

Let's move on quickly to the question of who is responsible for what. I said a bit about Benjamin Netanyahu's responsibility in the aforementioned article. As for Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, and the late Hassan Nasrallah of Hezbollah, their jihadist ideology blinded them to the realities of their adversary. The former is a perfect Hebrew speaker, the latter prided himself on being an expert on Israel, but both understood nothing of the country's power and drew false conclusions from its momentary weaknesses. In a famous speech, didn't Nasrallah declare that Israel, despite its nuclear and air power, was "weaker than a spider's web?" A quarter of a century later, the spider's web finally suffocated him.

That said, the only valid question is this: Can we still climb out of the quagmire into which the barbaric assault of October 7 plunged the region? Yes, provided we bear three facts in mind. The first: a return to the status quo ante is impossible. Obscured by Netanyahu's toxic personality, his destructive policies and the composition of his government, the root cause of the situation we're struggling with is the presence on Israel's borders of over-armed proto-states whose ultimate goal is its elimination. It's all very well to laugh at Netanyahu's promise of "total victory," i.e. the annihilation of Hamas and Hezbollah once and for all. But there is no doubt that they must be deprived of their power to cause harm, in other words, of their power at all.

At least four hospitals in Lebanon announced on Friday that they were suspending work because of Israeli strikes, while a Hezbollah-affiliated health organisation said that 11 paramedics had been killed in the past 24 hours.

The four closures capped two weeks of Israeli strikes on hospitals and healthcare workers in Lebanon that have shuttered at least 37 facilities and killed dozens of medical staff, according to the World Health Organisation.

Late on Friday night, the Israeli army issued a statement alleging that Hezbollah was using medical vehicles to transport fighters and weapons, warning that it would strike any vehicle it suspected of being used for military purposes.

Hospital staff in southern Lebanon told the BBC that health facilities treating wounded civilians had been hit with direct Israeli strikes. The BBC has approached the IDF for comment.

Four Lebanese hospitals suspend services amid Israeli bombing - Naharnet

At least four hospitals in Lebanon announced the suspension of work amid ongoing Israeli bombardment, while Hezbollah-affiliated rescuers said 11 personnel were killed in Israeli raids in south Lebanon.

On Friday, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati urged the international community to pressure Israel "to allow rescue and relief teams to reach bombed sites and allow them to move" casualties, with several dozen emergency personnel killed in recent days.

Sainte Therese Hospital on the edge of Beirut's southern suburbs reported "huge damage" and said "Israeli warplanes' targeting of... the vicinity" of the facility on Thursday "led to the halt of hospital services," in a statement carried by the official National News Agency (NNA).

South Lebanon's Mays al-Jabal hospital on the border with Israel announced "the halt to work of all departments," citing factors including "enemy targeting of the hospital" since last October and problems for supply lines and staff access.

The comment also came in a statement on the NNA.

The director of south Lebanon's Marjayoun governmental hospital, Mouenes Kalakesh, told AFP that "an Israeli air strike targeted ambulances at the main entrance to the hospital," killing paramedics who were bringing wounded to the facility.

He said the "staff shortages and today's bombardment have forced the closure of the hospital," located less than 10 kilometers (six miles) from the border.
