On 4 July 2013, Rim Zakaria and Zainab Awada, two Lebanese women who fled their abusive husbands, spoke at a press conference organized by the NGO KAFA–Enough Violence and Exploitation. They spoke boldly in defense of their rights and encouraged other women to speak up and report their abusers.
Zainab and Rim did not know that a delegate from parliament attended the conference. She was there to report on the conference to Speaker Nabih Berri, according to Faten Abou Chakra from KAFA.
Two days later, Berri added the draft law for protection of women from domestic violence as the first item on the agenda of the joint parliamentary committees, which approved it on July 22.
