Syrian rebels pushed into Alawite villages in the coastal region of Latakia on Monday, an activist group said, in what appears to be the biggest offensive yet in the regime’s heartlands.
The push comes after months of rebel setbacks, especially in the strategic central province of Homs.
According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-opposition monitoring group, rebels over-ran two villages in the mountains of Latakia on Monday, having captured four the previous day.
