BEIRUT: A U.S.-backed Syrian rebel group under attack by Nusra Front fighters Sunday announced that it was dissolving itself and joining a larger Islamist alliance based in the city of Aleppo.
The Hazm Movement issued a statement saying it took the decision in order to halt further bloodshed after weekend clashes between it and Nusra Front fighter killed several dozen rebels and jihadis, according to several sources.
The Nusra Front, al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria, announced last week an open war against Hazm, accusing it of kidnapping and killing a number of its militants. Hazm had leveled the same accusations at the Nusra Front as the two groups confronted each other in areas of Aleppo and Idlib province.
