The Aging Leftist (Ibrahim al-Amin- Al-Akhbar)

It is not old age that afflicts the Arab left today. The first signs of illness appeared shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Arab left did not know how to act then, and became like an orphan in need of pity and charity, but unable to attract the sympathy of others.

When left alone, its “contemplations” will bring back memories of the good times. But we do not see any of its work today, except in the role it adopts masquerading as the neighborhood physician who informs us that our child is sick and that we should take him to the doctor.

In Lebanon, there is a breed of leftists who have tried everything in the last five decades at least. They used to lead young people in universities, speak to crowds of workers and peasants, and spend long hours with the youth in the suburbs...
