Syrian Ministry of Information seeks to play greater role in presenting own country’s image to rest of world.
The Syrian Ministry of Information has witnessed significant changes over the past few years that took shape in the form of allowing a large number of private media companies to work in the country, in addition to launching a free media city that aims to develop Syria’s media rhetoric.
The Ministry has also paid special attention recently to its foreign media sector to present a more objective picture of Syria to counter the negative misrepresentations that the country faces in some western media outlets.
Director of the Foreign Media department at the Syrian Television, Reem Hadad, said that their department will invite a number of western media correspondents to visit Syria and get a first hand knowledge of the realities there.
Hadad said that Syrian TV already broadcasts its news in English, French and Spanish to keep its overseas immigrants informed of how events are really manifested in Syria.
She added, “There will be an increase in the number of news broadcasts and programmes presented in foreign languages because they have a bearing in showing the true picture of Syria, in addition to being a means of communication with Syria’s overseas immigrants.”
Hadad also stressed the importance of having Syrian media centres abroad, citing the fruitful efforts made by the Syrian Media Centre ever since its launch in London three years ago.
Regarding the special interest allocated by Syria to the Spanish language, Hadad said, “There is a large number of Syrian immigrants living in Latin American countries. However, most of these immigrants do not speak Arabic; therefore it is important to communicate with them in the language they know so that they would pass on the true picture of what is taking place in Syria to the peoples of the different countries they live in.”
The Foreign Media department is preparing a number of programmes that reflect Syrian lifestyle, culture, traditions, and archaeology, as well as tackling the issue of peaceful coexistence among all of the country’s communities.
Responsible for preparing programmes in Spanish at the Syrian TV, Anas Shamiya says preparations are undergoing to produce a programme entitled “Impressions” that aims to study the opinion of foreigners visiting Syria as well as Syrian immigrants coming to their country on various fields of life in Syria.
Shamiya had presented a programme called “Menmenmat” in Spanish last Ramadan that aims to strengthen the ties between Syria and its immigrants in Latin America, by depicting some special Latin American traditions and their counterparts in Syria, in addition to highlighting some of the important ancient sites in the country.
