Syrian election campaigns begin, with thousands announcing candidacy

Around 9,807 people have filed for candidacy in the 9th Syrian parliamentary elections, according to the interior ministry.

Of the 5,086 sector A (farmers) candidates, 639 were filed by women candidates. Of the 4,353 sector B (general population) candidates, 368 are women, the ministry said in a statement released on Friday.

The parliament seats 250 members; 127 seats are allocated for the laborers and farmers sector and 123 for the rest of the population. Of the 250 seats, 167 seats are allocated for the National Progressive Front, independents have 83 seats.

Aleppo ranked first in the number of filed applications with 1,391, followed by Hama with 919 applications, and Hums was third with 817 applications.

Damascus's streets are already seeing the start of the heated campaigns, with banners, especially those of independents, displayed all over the city.

The National Progressive Front's candidates have not started campaigning yet, as they are awaiting the approval of party leaders to the official list of candidates that could include non-party members.

Syrian elections will be held in the 15 constituencies on April 22.
