BEIRUT: Kataeb Party leader Amin Gemayel Monday called for a swift formation of the government, warning that the country was in grave danger.
“A Cabinet should be swiftly formed without any delay to fulfill the demands of people and to prepare for holding the presidential election within the constitutional deadline,” said Gemayel after meeting with Cardinal Beshara Rai in Bkirki.
Referring to the impasse in the Cabinet formation, Gemayel said it was time for the rival March 8 and March 14 camps “to give up on conditions and counter conditions.”
He added that “[such] complications do not serve the national interests, especially given that the new Cabinet will only be an interim one.”
Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam was tasked with forming the new government in April but his efforts have been thwarted due to differences between the country’s political groups.
The Kataeb leader also said Lebanon’s next president should be bold enough to confront all the challenges facing the country.
The term of President Michel Sleiman ends in May 2014.
Gemayel also warned that the country was in danger in light of the regional developments and called for safeguarding the Lebanese system.
“Lebanon is undergoing a dangerous phase and we are at the crossroads titled ‘to be or not to be’ given all that is happening in the region,” said Gemayel.
