AFTER almost two years of civil war, there are no longer two options for Syria, political or military. Both sides now rely on force.

      

The opposition activists who try to maintain the originally peaceful character of their uprising are still there, but the armed rebels are calling the shots. Those in the regime who wanted to engage the opposition in some form of dialogue were marginalized early on, when Bashar al-Assad chose to respond to the protests with force.

      

Eventually there will have to be a political process. But the conditions under which such a process will come about now largely depend on military developments on the ground — plus, to some extent, on the signals and actions of international players.

      

But if both sides are now using military means for political ends, the ends differ. For the opposition, the military struggle is a means to support the initially civilian uprising. It considers the civilian population, even in regime-controlled territory, as its base, and it aims to depose the regime by gaining military and political ground.

      

Many government officials are aware that the regime cannot win militarily — Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa said so much in a recent interview. But territorial losses and political setbacks have not made the regime core around Bashar al-Assad and his brother Maher more inclined to negotiate. Power sharing is simply not a concept in the Baathist world view. ..

Syria unrest has killed 60,000, says UN- BBC News

More than 60,000 people have been killed since Syria's uprising began in March 2011, the UN has said.

A study commissioned by UN human rights commissioner Navi Pillay collated data from seven different sources, and concluded that there had been 59,648 deaths until November 2012.

Ms Pillay said the figure would now have risen above 60,000 and described the bloodshed as "truly shocking".

Syrian opposition groups had previously estimated 45,000 people killed.

The Armed Forces Eliminate Most Dangerous Terrorists in Aleppo, Homs and Damascus countryside- SANA

PROVINCES, (SANA) – A unit of the Armed Forces on Wednesday destroyed a terrorists' hideout in al-Khifseh in Aleppo countryside.

 

An official source told SANA that most dangerous terrorists were eliminated during the operation, adding that the terrorists weapons and ammunition were also destroyed.

 

The source said that terrorist Omar Mar'e, leader of a terrorist group, was identified among the dead.

 

The source added that another army unit eliminated scores of terrorists who were committing murder and looting acts in the area of al-Sweiqa in Aleppo city.

 

Also in Aleppo city, terrorist hideouts and gatherings were destroyed in al-Fustuq marketplace, al-Hal marketplace, al-Fellin markeptplace in Bustan al-Qaser, Bani Zeid, near al-Hajjar factory near al-Shuhaba swimming pool, al-Rabe'a hall in al-Sukkari, and al-Inzarat neighborhood, killing and injuring a number of terrorists.

 

Meanwhile, the military engineering units dismantled 20 explosive devices planted by terrorists in several areas in old Aleppo.

 

In al-Safira area in Aleppo countryside, the Armed Forces eliminated a number of terrorists including Abdelaziz al-Ouf, Abdeljalil Jneidi, and Idris Hamdo al-Ibrahim.

 

Armed Forces units also destroyed terrorist gatherings in the villages of Hayan, Khan Touman, Mengh, Rasm al-Abboud, al-Mahdoum, al-Ouwayja, al-Aziza and Tal Shgheib.

 

Official Source Denies as Untrue Reports on Terrorists' Control on Taftanz Airport in Idleb

An official source on Wednesday denied as untrue what has been broadcast by a number of TV channels which are partners in shedding the Syrian blood about the terrorists' control on Taftanaz airport in Idleb.

 

The source added in a statement to SANA that those lies and rumors come in the framework of the hysterical campaign launched by misleading media institutions to raise the morale of the terrorists collapsed in front of the Army's strikes which pursue them everywhere.

 

It affirmed that units of the Airport's protection today strongly confronted an attempt by the terrorists to attack the airport from several axes, inflicting heavy losses among them and destroying their weapons and munitions.

 

Some media channels have claimed that the terrorists controlled Taftanaz airport in Idleb countryside.

Mossad agents in the Al-Qaeda unit that attacked the Yarmouk camp- Voltaire.net

The battle that raged starting December 9 in the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp (south of Damascus) has revealed new alliances.

 

The strategic objective was to involve Palestinians in the war in Syria, mobilizing them on a sectarian basis (they are mostly Sunni) against the secular regime. But the refugees did not allow themselves to be manipulated, no more than in Lebanon in 2007, when the mercenaries of Fatah al-Islam tried to mobilize the Palestinians of Nahr el-Bared against Hezbollah.

 

Elements of Hamas loyal to Meshaal allowed fighters of the Al-Nousra Front (Levantine branch of Al-Qaeda) to enter the camp where they mainly clashed with men of the PFLP (nationalists and Marxists).

Getting to Houla, the site of the massacre, from Rastan, barely 30 kilometers (20 miles) away, takes us three days and three different vehicles. Taldou, the part of the city where the massacre occurred, is located in a valley, surrounded by the higher elevation Alawite villages from which the murderers approached on the afternoon of May 25. "They keep an eye on all the roads into Taldou," an elderly farmer explained during one of our many hours of waiting. "You have to travel in vehicles they're familiar with. Otherwise they'll come down, block the road, and you're dead."

 

So we waited until a milk truck came, waited until a second familiar vehicle was available, then traveled in slow motion toward Taldou. But the route we took proved to be an important clue in the question of who perpetrated the massacre, rebels or soldiers.

 

What we saw was that it would hardly have been possible for 700 rebels to have traveled here unnoticed from Rastan, kill people in Taldou and then disappear again without a trace. This, however, is the story that the regime is spreading in various creative ways. There's the Jacobite nun from a convent near Homs, for example, who is traveling the world as a supposedly neutral PR spokesperson for the regime and spreading the myths that there is CIA conspiracy against Syria and that many thousands of foreign al-Qaida fighters are in the country. Then there are the two supposed eyewitnesses from Taldou that the regime presented to willing journalists in Damascus, political tourists and the United Nations employees trying to reconstruct the course of events of the massacre.

 

When we were in Taldou for two days in mid-July, it was under bombardment from army artillery. The houses were in the line of fire of snipers at a military post outside the town -- just as they were at the time of the massacre, which also included houses near the post. The testimony of eyewitnesses and survivors suggests the same conclusion that the UN's report reached: It was the army, not the rebels, who perpetrated the massacre.

Who lost Syria? Comments of some U.S. senators, analysts and journalists, including the editorial board of this newspaper, suggest there is no doubt: Bashar al-Assad and his thugocracy are primarily responsible for the killings, but the tragedy of Syria is also a direct result of a terrible failure of leadership on the part of the international community, and of the United States in particular.

Syria, it is charged, is Barack Obama’s Rwanda.

 

Don’t believe it.

The idea that Syria was anyone’s to win or lose, or that the United States could significantly shape the outcome there, is typical of the arrogant paternalism and flawed analysis that have gotten this country into heaps of trouble in the Middle East over the years.

One of the virtues of the Arab ­Spring/Winter is that Arab people came to own their politics — for better or worse. This sense of ownership was often painful to watch — democracy isn’t always liberal — but it brought authority and legitimacy to the political turbulence roiling that region since late 2010. That made change real and home-grown. The United States and Israel were not central to the myths, tropes and narratives of these historic changes, nor should they be.

Some have argued for intervention by attempting to draw a parallel to Libya: We helped the rebels bring down Moammar Gaddafi, this thinking goes. Why not do the same in Syria?

Suriye’de iki yıla yaklaşan isyan surecinde muhaliflerin kullandığı en önemli araçlardan birisi medya. El Cezire ve el Arabiya başta olmak üzere en az 80 televizyon kanalı Suriye yönetimi aleyhinde propaganda için kullanılıyor.

Bunların içerisinde “sadece Suriye’deki ‘devrim’ haberlerini vermek için” kurulanlar var. kurulum ve işletme maliyeti düşünüldüğünde bu kanalların sıradan bir işadamının medya yatırımları olmadığı gerçeği ortaya çıkıyor.

Bu kanallara isyanın başından bu yana görüntü çekip gönderen “muhabirler” doğrudan uydu ile bağlantı halinde gelişmiş cihazlar kullanıyor. Ortalama bir TV kanalını bile satın alırken düşündürecek kadar pahalı olan bu cihazlar ancak “eğitimli / eğitilmiş” kişilerin kullanabileceği komplike cihazlar.

İşin bir başka boyutu bu kanallara gönderilecek görüntülerin nasıl elde edildiği.

Bu arada çekimi yapan kişi “tarih su, yer şurası, Allahu Ekber” diyor ve gösteride birkaç slogan atıldıktan sonra kayıttan çıkılıyor. Bu kayıtlar anında el-Cezire başta olmak üzere çeşitli kanallara gönderiliyor. El-Cezire Mubaşir (canlı) ya da el-Cezire Arapça kanalları ise görüntüleri montajlıyor ve ekrana yansıtıyor.

Militants can marry Syrian women: Wahhabi cleric in Saudi Arabia- PRESS TV

A hard-line Wahhabi cleric in Saudi Arabia has recently issued a special religious decree that permits the militants in Syria to engage in short-term marriages with Syrian women.

Sheikh Mohammed al-Arifi said that the marriages between the foreign-backed militants and Syrian women will satisfy the militants’ sexual desires and boost their determination in killing Syrians.

He added that the marriages, dubbed by him as “intercourse marriages,” can be with Syrian females as young as 14 years old.

 He also promised “paradise” for those who marry the militants.
