Lebanon needs more help to tackle jihadi threat: PM- Daily Star

Lebanon's army, which has around 70,000 troops and is recruiting 10,000 more, "has showed respectable defence capacity", Salam said.
But "we need a lot more aid for it", he said.
Salam said Lebanon was not in danger of falling to jihadis from ISIS or Al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, Al-Nusra Front.
He dismissed the possibility of "an Islamic caliphate in Lebanon" such as that declared by ISIS in parts of Syria and Iraq.

U.N. Envoy Talks Aleppo Ceasefire Plan with Syria Rebels- Naharnet

U.N. peace envoy Staffan de Mistura met on Monday with Syrian opposition members to discuss his plan to "freeze" fighting in the country's war-ravaged second city Aleppo, his spokeswoman said.
"The talks started today at 11:00 am (0900 GMT) and lasted for eight hours with representatives from the main armed and non-armed groups," Juliette Touma told Agence France-Presse.
"We met with them separately in Gaziantep," in southern Turkey, she said, adding that the U.N. delegation was four-strong, including de Mistura.
The U.N. envoy first unveiled his plan for a ceasefire in Aleppo in October, touting it as a way for desperately-needed aid to reach the ruined former economic hub.
Syria's government has said it would "study" the proposal.
On Monday, al-Watan newspaper, which is close to the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad, said the government wanted the ceasefire to be limited to Aleppo city, while rebels want it to extend to the Bab al-Hawa border crossing with Turkey.

Deir Ezzor: ISIS Suffers Significant Losses Near the Military Airport- Al-Masdar News

After 3 days of nonstop besiegement, the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) 104th Airborne Brigade of the Republican Guard has forestalled the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham’s advance in the provincial capital of the Deir Ezzor Governorate after suffering significantly high casualties during their onslaught. British military base in Bahrain is a 'reward' for UK's silence on human rights, say campaigners- The Independent

The Royal Navy will set up a permanent base in Bahrain, to the dismay of human rights campaigners who say the base is a “reward” for the British’s government silence over torture, attacks on peaceful protesters and arbitrary detention in the tiny kingdom.

British minesweeper vessels have operated from temporary structures at Mina Salmon port for several years, but speaking in Bahrain the Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond announced a new deal with kingdom for a £15m naval base. It will be able to host destroyers and the Royal Navy's powerful new Queen Elizabeth aircraft carriers, which are currently under construction in Scotland.

Mikdad: Syria implements all commitments related to setting up a WMD-free zone- SANA

Beirut, SANA – Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad stressed that Syria has always rejected the logic of using weapons of mass destruction “WMD” and considered it as immoral, as it was among the first countries which called for joining the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1968.
” Syria has also called for making the Middle East a WMD-free zone in a time when Israel possesses all types of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and it overtly announces that it will not give them up backed by the US, England, and other Western countries,” Mikdad said in an article published Saturday by Lebanese al-Binaa Newspaper.
He indicated that the WMD possessed by Israel, the US, England and France can destroy the earth in minutes in a time when the representatives of the US announce at the international conferences that they are not responsible for the current wars which are by “chance” taking place in the developing countries, and they call for accounting the officials of these countries.
“Who will account presidents of the US and France for their crimes in Japan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Vietnam, Algeria and Libya?” Mikdad wondered.

In 2003 Syrian proposed a draft resolution on making the Middle East a WMD-free zone, yet the US and the West rejected this initiative, Mikdad said, indicating that the initiative would have led to destroying all mass destruction weapons.
Mikdad added that during the 19th conference of the States Parties of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), some countries alleged that Syria had used the chlorine gas, and later it has been proved that terrorist groups linked to Turkish, Saudi, US and French intelligences used this gas with the aim of distorting the image of the Syrian government and blackmailing it at the regional and international levels.

Shaaban dismisses as “baseless” any change in Russia stance towards Syria- SANA

Damascus, SANA – Presidential Political and Media Advisor Dr. Bouthaina Shaaban said that the resilience of Syria and its continued balanced logic in combating terrorism would have a role in the regional and the international arena.
Shaaban added, in an interview with the Syrian TV on Wednesday, Syria could play a key role in combating terrorism as Europe and the US’s awareness against its risks has increased.
Shaaban pointed out that terrorist organization of Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is not a middle eastern or Arab made, but an international one as the west has goals and strategies in the region on top is the security of Israel through weakening the Arab armies.
” The visit of the Syrian delegation to Moscow was “successful” as it proves Russia’s firm stance for supporting Syria in combating terrorism and shows Russia’s respect to the decision of the Syrian people and its keenness on Syria’s unity and territorial integrity,” Shaaban said, dismissing as “baseless” any change in Russia stance towards Syria.
Shaaban elaborated that Russia is playing a significant role in easing the impact of the role played by certain states like Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia on the track of the events (in Syria).
She pointed out that Russian and Syrian view pointes towards inter-Syrian dialogue are close, asserting that what has been agreed upon in Moscow is to continue consultations between the two governments for setting bases for this dialogue and its goals.

Machnouk says girl in custody is Baghdadi’s daughter- Daily Star

BEIRUT: Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk said Wednesday that DNA samples of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had been matched with one of the three children who are currently being held by Lebanese authorities, suspected of being related to the jihadi chief.

Machnouk revealed that Dulaimi had married Baghdadi for three months six years ago and they had a daughter together. The ISIS leader’s DNA matched with that of Dulaimi’s daughter, Machnouk said.

The DNA tests taken from Dulaimi also proved that she was the mother of the three children – one girl and two boys, a source in the investigation told The Daily Star.
