Aneesa Makhlouf, widow of late President Hafez al-Assad, passes away- SANA

The Presidency of the Syrian Arab Republic announced on Saturday evening that Aneesa Makhlouf, the widow of late President Hafez al-Assad, passed away at the age of 86.
The late Aneesa Makhlouf was born in Lattakia in 1930. She married the late President Hafez al-Assad in 1957 when he was a first lieutenant and accompanied him as he rose in rank and became Defense Minister in 1966, launched the Correctionist Movement, and became President of the Syrian Arab Republic from 1971 until 2000, remaining by his side throughout all the events and developments that took place in the country.

Is Syrian regime's seizure of Sheikh Miskin a tipping point?- Al-Monitor


DAMASCUS, Syria — Syrian opposition forces seized the city of Sheikh Miskin, in Daraa's northern countryside, at the end of 2014, but on Jan. 26, the regime regained control of the city, aided by Russian air cover as part of a military campaign launched Dec. 28. The government forces of President Bashar al-Assad had earlier regained control over strategic towns in the countryside of Latakia, including Salma, recovered Jan. 12, and Rabia and Rawda, retaken Jan. 24. The government forces' progress on several fronts cannot be isolated from the ongoing negotiations to end the war. The Geneva III peace talks officially convened Feb. 1.

After losing up to 60,000 soldiers in five years of fighting, the Syrian army has suddenly scored its greatest victory of the war – smashing its way through Jabhat al-Nusra and the other rebel forces around Aleppo and effectively sealing its fate as Russia provided air strike operations outside the city.
The rebel supply lines from Turkey to Aleppo have been cut, but this does not mean the end of the story. For many months, the regime’s own military authorities – along with tens of thousands of civilians, including many Christians – were trapped inside Aleppo and at the mercy of shelling and mortar fire by the Nusra fighters, who surrounded them until the army opened the main highway south. 
During this period, the only way to Aleppo was by plane because the army held a tiny peninsula of territory going to the airport – I flew out one night on a military aircraft crowded with wounded Syrian troops.

US Confirms Involvement in Syria Airfield Expansion- VOA

At the urging of an American contingent, Syrian Kurds are expanding an airbase on farmland in northeast Syria that could be used for military purposes, according to Kurdish and U.S. officials.
Known as Abu Hajar airport, the airbase is located in the Rmelan area of northern Syria, and is controlled by the Kurdish People's Defense Units and the Syrian Democratic Forces. Neither has an air force.
A team of Americans pitched the idea to Syrian Democratic Forces to extend the runway, a defense official told VOA on the condition of anonymity.
The official Wednesday said the airfield is being extended from 700 meters to 1,300 meters.

The Syrian Army and the country's National Defense Forces have reportedly managed to take full control of a strategic road in Aleppo as they continued their offensive against militants in this northern Syrian province.

A key road has been secured by the Syrian Army and the country's National Defense Forces (NDF) in northern Aleppo Province, where the army continued its advance on militant groups, media reports said.

Dozens of militants were killed and many more wounded after the Syrian troops finally captured the Ma'arasta-Masqan road in northern Aleppo, where the army earlier broke the militants' four-year siege of two towns, sources said.

SAA: Aleppo siege break a “heavy blow” to terrorists- Al-Masdar News

SANA have reported that the General Command of the Army and Armed Forces said breaking the long-time terrorist siege of Nubbul and al-Zahraa towns in Aleppo northern countryside has handed down a debilitating blow to the project of terrorists in the region. 

In a statement to SANA, the General Command said the new military win capped a series of successful military operations that saw army units in cooperation with popular defense groups establish control over several towns and villages in Aleppo northern countryside, which eventually ended with breaking the siege of the two towns. 


Scores of terrorists were killed in the process, the statement added.

Military Court Adjourns Samaha Trial to Feb. 18- Naharnet

The Military Court of Cassation adjourned on Thursday the trial of former Information Minister Michel Samaha on terrorism charges to February 18.
Samaha last appeared in court on January 21 and answered a series of questions on the transfer of explosives from Syria to Lebanon for the purpose of carrying out terrorist acts.
It was his first appearance since his release on bail from prison under a controversial Military Court ruling that drew condemnation from several politicians.
The ex-minister was arrested in August 2012 and charged with attempting to carry out "terrorist acts" over allegations that he and Syrian security services chief Ali Mamluk transported explosives and planned attacks and assassinations of political and religious figures in Lebanon.

Syrian army and allies break rebel siege of Shiite towns- Al-Arabiya


The Syrian army and its allies have broken a three-year rebel siege of two Shi’ite towns in northwest Syria, government and rebel groups said on Wednesday, cutting off a main insurgent route to nearby Turkey.

The two towns of Nubul and Zahraa, with an estimated 60,000 population, are connected to the border by areas under the control of Kurdish militias that provided them some access.

Al Manar, television channel of Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group, joined Syria’s army and state media in reporting the breakthrough, which it said came after the army moved in from towns secured in a recent offensive in northern Aleppo province.

Syrian Army Breaks Long-Running Rebel Siege on Aleppo Shiite Villages- Naharnet

The Syrian army on Wednesday cut the last supply route linking opposition forces in the northern city of Aleppo to the Turkish border, a military source said, in a major blow to the rebels.
The source said the army had broken a three-year rebel siege of two government-held Shiite villages, Nubol and Zahraa, and taken control of parts of the supply route.
"Heavy air strikes by Russian planes" supported the army in its advance, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.
The development came as U.N. special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura in Geneva presses ahead with efforts to engage Syria's warring sides in indirect peace talks aimed at ending almost five years of conflict.
Russian planes have carried out heavy air strikes throughout the area north of Aleppo city in the last few days. 
The government advance comes almost exactly a year after the failure of a similar regime offensive aimed at reaching Nubol and Zahraa and severing rebel supply lines into Aleppo city.

Provinces, SANA – Continued army operations in Aleppo resulted in cutting off a supply route for terrorists in the northern countryside, while army units in other areas targeted more positions, destroying their equipment and killing many of them.

Sources on the ground told SANA’s correspondent on Wednesday that Army and Armed Forces units operating in Aleppo’s northern countryside, in cooperation with groups of popular committees, broke the siege imposed on Nubbul and al-Zahra towns by terrorist organizations.
ِِArmy units advanced towards Dweir al-Zeitoun,Tal Jbeen and Hardanteen towns to which security and stability were restored on Tuesday.
Scores of terrorists were killed, most of them from Jabhat al-Nusra during the operations, some others fled away leaving arms and ammunition, while some of them turned themselves along with their arms to the army and the popular groups.
Army units completely cut off supply routes coming from the Turkish territories to terrorists fortified in Mayer town in a new advance leading to more victory.
Earlier, army units, in cooperation with popular defense groups, restored security and stability to al-Uwainat village in the eastern countryside of the province inflicting heavy losses on the ISIS terrorists who were positioned in it, a military source told SANA.

Tiger Forces storm Tayyibah village in eastern Aleppo- Al-Masdar News


Moments ago, the Syrian Arab Army entered the village of Tayyibah (Teibah) after a joint blitz offensive was launched by the elite Tiger Forces from both Jubb al-Kalb and al-Afesh villages simultaneously. UN envoy: Syria peace talks suspended until 25 February- TASS

GENEVA, February 3. /TASS/. Syria peace talks have been suspended until February 25, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said on Wednesday after a meeting with the Riyadh-formed Syrian opposition delegation. 

The talks are on pause, de Mistura has said adding they would resume on February 25. 


"I have concluded frankly that after the first week of preparatory talks there is more work to be done, not only by us but by the stakeholders," he said. "I have indicated from the first day that I won't talk for the sake of talking."

Shutting off smuggling through Turkey-Syria border key condition for ceasefire in Syria - Lavrov- RT

Ending smuggling across the Turkish-Syrian border is a key condition to make the ceasefire work in the Syrian conflict, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said, stressing that he sees no reason to stop the Russian counter-terrorist operation in Syria.
“The key component for the ceasefire to be operational is the burning issue of arms smuggling across the Turkish-Syrian border, supplying the militants [in Syria],” Lavrov said.
Without the smuggling being disrupted, “it is hard to expect the ceasefire to take place – ever,” he said, adding that the issue has been discussed with the American co-chairs of the Syrian Support Group.
Lavrov expressed hope that more detailed dialogue will continue after the Syrian Support Group meets in Munich on February 11, where Moscow will present its own suggestions regarding the ceasefire in Syria.

Geneva, SANA – Head of the Syrian Arab Republic delegation to the intra-Syrian dialogue in Geneva, Bashar al-Jaafari, said that the preparatory phase for the dialogue in Geneva is likely to take longer than anticipated.
In a statement to Reuters on Wednesday, al-Jaafari said “It seems the first phase of preparations will take a much longer time expected and we don’t know yet when we will finish,” adding that the Syrian Arab Republic delegation doesn’t know who its interlocutors would be, how many delegations they would face and the names of all participants.
He added that information provided by UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura show that several of the participants haven’t arrived at Geneva yet.
