Syrian Rebels Make More Gains In Aleppo Despite Taking Heavy Losses (Videos) - South Front

Despite taking heavy losses, militants led by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) made more gains in the western countryside of Aleppo as a part of their large-scale offensive against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), codenamed Operation Deterrence of Aggression, over the night of November 28 and 29.

Just after midnight, the militants announced that they had captured the towns of Miznaz, Kafr Dael, al-Barqoum, Babis, Bashqatin, Bashantra, al-Kasebiyeh, and al-Arbikh.

Later in the morning it was reported that the towns of Khan Touman, Jab Kas, al-Talhiyah, Tal al-Karatin, al-Bawabiyah, Abu Qansa, Zeitan, and al-Salihiyah had also fallen into the hands of HTS and its allies.

This advance left the militants in control in some 20 kilometers of the M5 highway leading to Aleppo city. It also boroughs them closer to the city center, with Khan Touman being located less than eight kilometers away from the Ramouse Industrial Zone in the southwestern outskirts of the city.

Syrian army foils attack, launches counteroffensive in Idlib - Al-Mayadeen

The Syrian army successfully repelled the advance of the joint operations room of terrorists southeast of Idlib, as fierce clashes continue to rage on the western Aleppo front.

On Thursday, the Syrian army launched a counteroffensive to retake positions it had previously vacated in southeastern Idlib.

The army regained control of the village of Jobas and forced militants to retreat from the villages of Dadikh and Kafr Batekh in eastern Idlib, with the heaviest fighting concentrated around these areas. Syrian forces also conducted targeted rocket strikes to prevent militants from returning to these strategic locations.

The counteroffensive was accompanied by a sustained barrage of missile strikes on the headquarters of the joint operations room of militants, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which is supported by Turkish and Ukrainian intelligence. These strikes targeted areas west of Aleppo and extended as far as the supply lines in Jabal al-Zawiya, south of Idlib.

Meanwhile, intense fighting continues on two fronts in rural Aleppo between the Syrian army and armed groups. The first front is in Andan, and the second is in Khan al-Asal, where militants are desperately trying to break through.

In a related development, Syrian warplanes launched a series of strikes against a key operations headquarters of the joint operations room of militants on the outskirts of the town of Mare' in northern Aleppo, resulting in significant casualties among the militants.

Terrorist Groups Move in Syria’s North just after Israeli Failure in South Lebanon - Al-Manar

The Syrian army, backed by the Russian air force and allies, have been confronting a major attack launched by the terrorist groups on the territories it controls in Aleppo Countryside since Wednesday.

The militant move comes immediately after the ceasefire in South Lebanon took into effect as Israeli invasion due to the fierce resistance of Hezbollah fighters, which raises several questions about the Zionist role in pushing the takfiris to operate in Syria again in an attempt to undermine its support to the Islamic Resistance in Lebanon.

Well-informed sources mentioned that the militant offensive was almost repelled, adding that the Syrian military managed even to contain the terrorist move and launch a counterstrike.

It is worth noting that military battles between Hayyaat Tahrir Al-Sham and opposition factions on one hand, and regime forces and their proxy militias on the other have intensified in Aleppo and Idlib countryside since the early hours of Wednesday morning, November 27. The military battles have left 182 combatants dead until now; they are distributed as followed:

Israel says hit Hezbollah rocket site after noticing 'terrorist activity' - Naharnet

Two airstrikes targeted an area in the Sidon district on Thursday afternoon, Lebanese TV networks said.

The Israeli army said a warplane carried out an airstrike after "terrorist activity was detected at a Hezbollah facility containing medium-range rockets in south Lebanon."

"The IDF (Israeli army) is deployed in southern Lebanon, acting to thwart any violation of the ceasefire agreement," the Israeli military added.

This is the first such violation of the ceasefire that entered into effect on Wednesday morning.

An Israeli official told U.S. news portal Axios that Israel "notified the U.S. in advance" of the strike.

The mayor of the town of Baysariyeh in southern Lebanon, Nazih Eid, told AFP "a warplane launched a raid about an hour ago on the eastern edge of the town of Baysariyeh. They targeted a forested area not accessible to civilians."

The Israeli army earlier on Thursday said it fired at several suspects "arriving with vehicles to a number of areas in southern Lebanon, breaching the conditions of the ceasefire."

Syria jihadists, allies cut key highway linking Damascus to Aleppo - Naharnet

Jihadists and their allies cut a major highway linking the main cities of Damascus and Aleppo on Thursday after launching an offensive against government forces in Syria's northwest, a war monitor said.

"Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied factions cut off the Damascus-Aleppo international M5 highway... in addition to controlling the junction between the M4 and M5 highways," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The government and its allies had responded to the large-scale attack with airstrikes and shelling to ward off the insurgent advances, activists said.

The violence has displaced thousands of families, and forced aid groups to suspend some of their services. Volunteers with the Syrian Civil Defense, known as the White Helmets, said at least 18 people, including three children and two women, were killed in two different villages in western Aleppo following airstrikes. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor, said the airstrikes were from Russian warplanes.

Syria's armed forces said Thursday the offensive was led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, which controls much of northwest Syria and is a violation of a de-escalation agreement. It said the attacks are ongoing and have targeted a number of villages and military bases.

Turkey, which backs Syrian opposition factions, and Russia and Iran, which have backed government forces, reached an agreement in late 2019 that effectively froze the line of the conflict and prevented government advances in Idlib province, which has been the last stronghold for a mix of radical groups and Turkey-backed Syrian forces.

"Our forces are confronting the terrorist organizations with different power and in collaboration with friendly forces to ensure the situation returns to how it was," the army statement said.

Opposition factions launched the offensive early Wednesday and claimed in a series of statements on social media that they have wrestled control of over 15 villages from government forces in northwestern Aleppo, capturing a military base and hardware, and taking a number of soldiers hostage.

Parliament renews army chief's term in first session after ceasefire - Naharnet

Lebanon's parliament Thursday renewed the term of army chief Joseph Aoun, who is seen as a potential presidential candidate in next year's vote.

The parliament has seldom met since war began 14 months ago, and has not convened to try to elect a president since June 2023, leaving the country in a political gridlock.

Thursday's session is the first since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire came into effect on Wednesday which has left the Lebanese military responsible for ensuring Hezbollah militants leave the country's south and its facilities dismantled. The army is expected to receive international aid to help deploy troops in the south to exert full state control there.

Gen. Joseph Aoun is seen as a likely presidential candidate due to his close relationship with the international community and his hold on an institution that is seen as a rare point of unity in the country facing political and sectarian tensions. Lebanon has been without a president since Oct. 31, 2022.

It is unclear whether the decision to renew Aoun's term will impact his chances as Lebanon's next president.

Hezbollah and some of its key allies and their legislators have been skeptical of a Aoun presidency due to his close relationship with Washington.

Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who spearheaded negotiations with the United States to end the war, also called for parliament to convene on Jan. 9, 2025 to elect a president, the first attempt in almost 19 months.

French special envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian, tasked by French President Emmanuel Macron with helping Lebanon break its political deadlock, observed the session before meeting with Berri and later caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

Clashes Approach Syria’s Aleppo City As Rebels Make More Gains (Videos) - South Front

Militants led by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) advanced closer to the northern Syrian city of Aleppo on November 28 as a part of their large-scale offensive against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), codenamed Operation Deterrence of Aggression.

Following heavy clashes with the SAA in the western Aleppo countryside, the militants managed to capture the towns of Khan al-Assal, Kafrnaha, Yaqed Al-Adas, and the 1st Engineers’ Village. Khan al-Assal is located around six kilometers away from the western entrance of Aleppo city.

The militants also advanced to the southwest of the city, capturing the town of al-Zarba which is located on the strategic M5 highway, the main route to Aleppo. The Sham FM pro-government radio station reported that the highway was closed by the SAA.

In the morning, HTS and its allies, including the Turkistan Islamic Party, Jama’at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad and cluster of Turkey-backed armed factions, launched a separate assault in southern Idlib countryside and reportedly managed to capture the towns of Dadikh, Kafr Batikh, and Sheikh Ali, which are located along the M5.

Heavy clashes were also reported in the nearby town of Saraqib. However, the key town remains in the hands of the SAA and other pro-government factions.

Warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces and the Syrian Arab Air Force continued to target militants between the western Aleppo countryside and the southern Ilib countryside.

Meanwhile, reinforcements from the 25th Special Mission Forces Division, 4th Armored Division, the Republican Guards, the Special Mission Forces and other formations of the SAA have reportedly begun to arrive to the fronts in both Aleppo and Idlib.

Mayor of Khiam tells LBCI: Israeli army fired sound bombs at residents - LBC

The mayor of Khiam, South Lebanon, confirmed that what happened on Wednesday was that some residents returned to the town and reached a point where the Israeli army was still present.

The army then fired sound bombs at them, including at journalists.

He told LBCI: "We asked the residents not to enter according to the ceasefire agreement so that the Lebanese army could first enter and ensure the safety of the residents before they return."

He confirmed that the Israeli army is present in the northeastern area of Khiam and near the town only.

Northern Israeli settlers frustrated over Lebanon ceasefire - Al-Mayadeen

As residents in South Lebanon return to their homes following the implementation of the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and the Israeli occupation, Israeli media reports highlight growing fear and frustration among settlers in northern border settlements. These sentiments are fueled by what they describe as a sense of abandonment by the Israeli government, which has been echoed repeatedly throughout the war.

Israeli Channel 12 reported a "deep mistrust" between northern settlers and the Israeli occupation forces, noting that "no one has addressed the reality in the north for over a year." The network quoted a resident of Metulla, a northern border settlement, who said, "Being neighbors with Lebanon, the Israeli military must do much more to restore our sense of security."

Despite government calls for settlers to return, many express doubts, with Channel 12 adding that "there is no place to return to." The displacement has also disrupted daily life, including education, as families struggle to resume normal routines.

Strategic advisor Eyalet Frisch criticized the mass evacuation of roughly 100,000 northern settlers during the war, describing it as a "strategic mistake" driven by "hysteria over Hezbollah." Former Israeli military spokesperson Avi Benayahu echoed this view, stating that the military was in a state of panic after evacuating from the north.

Army deploys in south Lebanon under ceasefire deal - Naharnet

Lebanon's military deployed troops and tanks across the country's south on Thursday as a ceasefire in the Israel-Hezbollah war largely held for a second day.

The truce ended a war that began a day after Hamas's unprecedented October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, killing thousands in Lebanon and sparking mass displacements in both Lebanon and Israel.

Israel shifted its focus from Gaza to Lebanon in September to secure its northern border from Hezbollah attacks, dealing the Iran-backed movement a series of staggering blows.

Under the terms of the ceasefire, the Lebanese army and U.N. peacekeepers were to become the only armed presence in south Lebanon, where Hezbollah has long held sway.

A Lebanese army source said its forces were "conducting patrols and setting up checkpoints" south of the Litani River without advancing into areas where Israeli forces were still present.

In the border village of Qlaaya, residents threw rice and flowers to celebrate the arrival of Lebanese soldiers.

"We only want the Lebanese army," chanted the residents of the Christian-majority village, as they clapped and cheered for the troops and waved the Lebanese red, white and green flag.

Since the ceasefire took effect on Wednesday, tens of thousands of Lebanese who fled their homes have headed back to their towns and villages, only to find scenes of devastation.

Is he alive? Recent photos of Safa emerge after ceasefire - Naharnet

Pictures of Hezbollah Coordination and Liaison Unit chief Wafiq Safa surfaced Wednesday on social media shortly after the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire went into effect.

Safa’s fate had remained shrouded in mystery after reports said he was either killed or severely injured in a massive Israeli airstrike that targeted two buildings in Beirut’s Nweiri and Basta.

Safa appears unscathed in the circulated pictures, which show him visiting a cemetery along with other men at an unidentified location.

The airstrike that targeted Nweiri and Basta left dozens of people dead or wounded and was largely portrayed in the media as an attempt to assassinate Safa.
