Jumblat Hails Reactivation of Lebanon's Oil and Gas File- Naharnet
Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat hailed on Saturday the reactivation of efforts with regard to Lebanon's oil and gas wealth, after a dispute over excavation between the Free Patriotic Movement and the AMAL Movement was reportedly settled a day earlier.
“It seems that the oil file which has been pending for years will finally be tackled,” said Jumblat via his Twitter account.
“In order to preserve this national wealth and benefit from it, it may be useful that we take advantage of remarks made by an expert in the oil field Nicolas Sarkis,” he added.
Jumblat stressed that it is crucial that the file is handled with transparency by the legal and financial figures, he said: “A transparent legal and financial management here is crucial. It is better that things remain clear because the issue can not endure confusion.”
Hizbullah Destroys IS Positions in Ras Baalbek- Naharnet
Hizbullah has reportedly destroyed Islamic State group positions entrenched on the outskirts of the border town of Ras Baalbek and al-Zwaytineh, al-Manar TV said on Saturday.
The TV station said that Hizbullah fighters bombarded two positions during the attack and that several were killed and wounded.
Militants from the al-Qaida-linked al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State group are entrenched in rugged mountains along the Lebanese-Syrian border and the Lebanese army regularly shells their positions while Hizbullah and the Syrian army have engaged in clashes with them on the Syrian side of the border.
Russian aircraft carrier to take part in Syria operation by October – source- RT
Russia’s only aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, is preparing to head to Syria to serve as a platform for carrying out airstrikes on jihadists, a military diplomatic source told TASS. It will remain in the Mediterranean until at least January 2017.
The news agency stressed that there has been no official confirmation of this information so far.
The heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser will reportedly have 15 Sukhoi Su-33 all-weather air superiority fighters and Mikoyan MiG-29K/KUB multirole fighters onboard, as well as more than 10 Kamov Ka-52K, Ka-27, and Ka-31 helicopters.

Syria rebels retake key town in western coastal province: monitor, rebels- Reuters
Insurgents seized a strategic town from Syrian government forces and their allies in the western coastal province of Latakia on Friday, a monitoring group and the rebels said, in a rare advance for them in the area.
The Syrian government forces had captured Kansaba in February, part of a wider advance in Latakia's northern countryside at the time, backed by Russian air power.
Fighting picked up again in the area after a ceasefire deal later that month brought a temporary lull. The truce has mostly unraveled throughout areas where it took effect in the west of the country.
The al Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front was among the groups that retook Kansaba, which had previously been an important base for the insurgents. The town overlooks much of the mountainous Jabal Akrad area close to the Turkish border, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Rebels say pilot killed after plane shot down- BBC News
Syrian rebels say they shot down a Syrian air force jet and blamed an al-Qaeda-linked group for killing the pilot.
Two leading groups, Jaysh al-Islam and Ahrar al-Sham, which formed a pact last year, both say the plane was shot down.
Syrian state media said the crash was caused by a technical fault.
Jaysh al-Islam, the larger of the two groups, posted footage online which it claimed showed the pilot being held after ejecting from the jet.

ISIL will not spare any country in the Middle East from getting some of its deadly mix. Saudi Arabia, which has been accused by some of its enemies of having supported the organization, has been hit by a chain of audacious suicide attacks in the space of a day. ISIL did not even avoid holy places where violence is prohibited by the teachings of Islam. Even in Kuwait, known as a peaceful and stable country, ISIL moved to attack its national unity through targeting Shia mosques. Kuwaiti security was able to abort a chain of terrorist attacks planned by three ISIL sleeper cells. One of the targets was the Shia Zain al-Abedin Mosque, to sow the seeds of sectarian cracks in a country that has a distinctive national identity.
Shortly before the start of Kuwait’s security crackdown on ISIL supporters and cells, the terrorist organization hit Baghdad with a chain of attacks targeting Shia heavily populated areas, the worst attack to hit Baghdad in recent years. And before that, it carried out coordinated suicide bombings at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport.
But the case of Turkey deserves a short pause and a little more reflection. For while the attacks on Iraq and the planned attacks on Kuwait targeted the Shia, in Turkey, where there is a very small Shia minority, the objective was straightforwardly political.
Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a U-turn in his position on ISIL a few months ago. Now he is cracking down on the routes the group used to smuggle everything to Syria, and from Syria to Europe. This was an indication that Erdoğan has already started changing directions.

Army Foils Terror Plots Planned by the Islamic State- Naharnet
The army intelligence said on Thursday that it had foiled two Islamic State group plots that aimed to carry out attacks on a tourist facility and a densely populated area in Lebanon, the Army Command Orientation Directorate said in a statement on Thursday.
“The army was able to thwart a highly dangerous scheme planned by the terrorist Islamic State group,” the statement said.
“It arrested five IS members involved, including the mastermind behind the plot,” added the statement.
“The detainees confessed to having carried out terrorist acts attacks against the army previously.”
“The plan aimed to target a large tourist facility and a densely populated area in Lebanon.”
Investigations have been kicked off under the supervision of the related judicial authorities.

Al-Qaa Bids Farewell to Blasts Victims as Archbishop Urges Declaring Outskirts a 'Military Zone'- Naharnet
The restive eastern border town of al-Qaa bid farewell Wednesday to five of its sons who were killed before dawn Monday in unprecedented multiple suicide bombings, as the region's Christian spiritual leader called for turning the neighboring area of Masharii al-Qaa into a “military zone.”
Faysal Aad, Joseph Lebbos, Majed Wehbe, Boulos al-Ahmar and George Fares were laid to rest at the town's cemetery after a highly emotional funeral that was held amid strict security measures.
The funeral had been postponed to Wednesday over security fears, after the town was hit by two waves of attacks on Monday. Four suicide bombers targeted the town in the pre-dawn attack, killing five people and wounding 15 others, as another four bombers attacked the town in the evening and wounded 13 people.
“The town of al-Qaa is Lebanon's rock and on this rock the terrorists were crushed and they entered the gateways of hell while the gateways of heaven were opened for our martyrs,” Greek Catholic Archbishop of Baalbek Elias Rahal said at the funeral.
“We will remain in this land and we will not budge, even if we offer 100 martyrs everyday,” a defiant Rahal added.
