About 600 British citizens have been intercepted while trying to reach Syria, Philip Hammond disclosed on Friday, hailing this as a result of closer intelligence cooperation with Turkey.
The Foreign Secretary’s two-day visit to Ankara and Saricam refugee camp in southern Turkey was dominated by the questions of how to prevent foreign fighters from entering Syria – and how to stop migrants from coming in the other direction towards Europe.
Under a landmark agreement reached last October, Turkey is supposed to stem the flow of migrants with the aid of 3 billion euros of EU funding. But none of that money has yet arrived.
