BEIRUT: Youssef Saide, head of the Lebanese Forces' office in Zahle’s Ferzol, was released Monday afternoon after having been detained for more than 24 hours following a dispute in Zahle.
The Lebanese Army intervened early Sunday morning after supporters of the LF and the Free Patriotic Movement became embroiled in a shouting match over an attempt by the LF to erect a monument commemorating its martyrs.
The statue’s installation was blocked by FPM MP Michel Daher, who refused to have it placed near his family home and called for the Army to intervene.
The dispute, the latest incarnation of the tensions between the two major Christian parties, culminated in the arrest of Saide, along with five other men affiliated with the LF, who were later released.
