Hezbollah on Friday said it fired volleys of Katyusha rockets at six Israeli command and air defense bases in the Golan and northern Israel in response to Israeli attacks on the South, hours after Israel launched intensive airstrikes on forest areas in south Lebanon.
Five of the attacks targeted the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights while a sixth targeted an air defense base near Safad in north Israel. Hezbollah also announced an anti-tank guided missile attack on an Israeli post in Metula near the border.
Israeli airstrikes meanwhile targeted several southern border villages.
The Israeli army said that some 60 rockets were fired into Israeli territory from Lebanon on Friday, as sirens rang out in northern Israel.
"A barrage of some 60 rockets was fired at 1:02 pm (1002 GMT)," a military spokeswoman told AFP.
The incoming fire came after the Israeli military said it struck dozens of rocket launchers overnight that were ready for use against Israel.
Hezbollah has intensified its attacks since Thursday morning, after pager and walkie-talkie blasts blamed on Israel killed 37 people and wounded around 3,000 others across Lebanon on Tuesday and Wednesday. The devices carried by Hezbollah members were booby-trapped by Israel, Lebanese authorities and international media organizations have said.
On Thursday, Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah vowed “tough retribution and just punishment” against Israel over the massive attacks, calling them massacres.
