Clinton warns Syria rebels to resist extremism- BBC News

 

US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton has urged Syria's opposition to resist efforts by extremist groups to "hijack the revolution".

Speaking on a trip to Croatia, she said the rebel leadership needed to be more inclusive of those fighting in Syria.

The Turkey-based Syrian National Council (SNC) has been powerless to stop the escalating violence.

Mrs Clinton also revealed the Obama administration has suggested who should feature in the rebel leadership.

"There has to be a representation of those who are in the front lines fighting and dying," she told reporters.

"This cannot be an opposition represented by people who have many good attributes but who, in many instances, have not been inside Syria for 20, 30, 40 years."

The secretary of state said there had been "disturbing reports" of Islamic extremists entering Syria to try and take advantage of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad...

Clinton: SNC No Longer Leads Syrian Opposition- VOA

ZAGREB — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday that the Syrian National Council can no longer be seen as leading the opposition to embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Washington is hoping new rebel leaders emerge next week from a meeting of Assad opponents in Doha.

Secretary Clinton said Syria needs a united opposition dedicated to representing and protecting all of the country's ethnic groups, and resisting efforts by extremists to hijack what she says has been "a legitimate revolution against an oppressive regime."

Clinton said the Obama administration no longer believes the Syrian National Council, or SNC, fills that role.

"We've made it clear that the SNC can no longer be viewed as the visible leader of the opposition," she said. "They can be part of a larger opposition. But that opposition must include people from inside Syria and others who have a legitimate voice that needs to be heard."

Syria rebels, Kurdish militia discuss cease-fire- CNN

Istanbul (CNN) -- Syrian rebels and a Kurdish militia appear to be negotiating a cease-fire after clashes in the battle-scarred northern city of Aleppo on Saturday left at least 21 fighters dead and more than 100 people kidnapped.

According to Ahmad Afash, a commander from the rebel Free Syrian Army, or FSA, at least 16 FSA fighters were killed when they clashed with armed members of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party, or PYD, on Saturday. He said at least five Kurdish fighters were also killed in the battle...

Cartoonist Ali Farzat: Fear defeated in Syria- Daily Star

CAIRO: Cartoonist Ali Farzat’s hand glides over the paper, once more creating the images of defiance he says have helped mobilize Syrians to revolt against President Bashar Assad.

 

Just over 12 months ago, the Syrian artist was kidnapped, beaten and burned in an attack he blamed on security police trying to silence him and stop him drawing the caricatures that protesters had waved aloft as they took to the streets.

 

His hands were smashed and he suffered facial burns, temporary loss of his eyesight and multiple broken bones.

 

One of Syria’s most famous artists, Farzat earned recognition in the Arab world and beyond for stinging cartoons of Arab leaders such as Libya’s Moammar Gadhafi and Iraq’s Saddam Hussein and, finally, Assad.

 

Farzat, 60, escaped to Kuwait to recuperate. Now in Egypt, Farzat said he was determined to continue his work and support those still seeking to topple Assad 19 months after they began.

Vali Mahluf; hain teröristlerin yaya ve trafiğin yoğun olduğu sivil bir yerleşim alanını hedef aldıklarına dikkat çekerken dolayısıyla çok sayıda sivil kurbanın gittiğini söyledi.

Terrorists Continue Attacks in Several Provinces, Violating Suspension of Military Operations for 4th Day- SANA

PROVINCES, (SANA)- For the fourth consecutive day, the armed terrorist groups in Deir Ezzor continued violating the declaration on suspending military operations which the Armed Forces have committed to.

 

An official source told SANA that terrorist groups on Monday committed acts of aggression and sabotage in al-Shheil area in the countryside of the province.

 

The source said the Armed Forces repelled the terrorists inflicting heavy losses upon them and destroying their cars.

In Harasta city in Damascus Countryside, a unit of the Armed Forces confronted a terrorist group which was perpetrating acts of sabotage near al-Hassan Mosque and al-Thanawiya Square, leading to eliminating a number of terrorists and seizing their weapons.

 

An official source told SANA reporter that a field hospital was found near the mosque with a huge quantity of medical drugs and equipment.

İngiltere Meclis Dışişleri Komisyonu Başkanı Richard Ottoway, BM kararı olmaksızın Suriye’ye askeri bir müdahale yapmanın doğru olmayacağını belirterek “Esed rejimi, ağır silahlara ve geniş savunma gücüne sahip. Bu sebeple Suriye’ye müdahale etmek büyük bir askeri operasyonu gerektirir ki şu anda gerek ekonomik gerekse politik olarak uygulanabilir değil” dedi. Eid Business Interrupted in Lebanon- Al-Akhbar

Tripoli and Saida’s local businesses took a serious hit following the assassination of security chief Wissam al-Hassan and the ensuing tension on the eve of Eid al-Adha, a major holiday.

 

Tripoli’s merchants and businessmen complain local gunmen forced them to shut down their stores following Friday’s explosion in Achrafieh which killed Hassan and two others. Many blamed the Sunni political leadership, with accusations particularly coming from the opposition-aligned Future Movement, which some say acts as an umbrella for a loose confederation of undisciplined armed groups including Salafi and Islamist organizations.

 

“We are very sympathetic towards the martyr Hassan and we have the utmost respect for him, but how do these actions benefit anyone?” asked Mahmoud Kamaleddine, who owns a clothing shop in Tripoli’s Bazirkan market.

 

“Must our businesses and country go to ruins so Saad Hariri can head the government again?” he continued...

Health Minister Visits Citizens Injured in Daf al-Shouk Bombing- SANA

DAMASCUS, (SANA) – Health Minister Dr. Saad al-Nayef on Saturday visited citizens injured in Friday's bombing in Daf al-Shouk neighborhood in Damascus, 28 of which, most of them children, are still receiving treatment.

 

Al-Nayef said that medical staff are providing all the necessary treatment to the injured, affirming that terrorist bombings only serve the enemies of Syria.

 

In turn, hospital director Dr. Adib Mahmoud said that 15 martyrs killed in the aforementioned bombing arrived at the hospital, 8 of them children, in addition to 92 wounded and injured citizens, 65 of them children..

Despite Truce Car Bomb Attack Targets Syria’s Deir Ezzor- Al-Manar

In a new violation for the ceasefire in Syria, a car bomb exploded on Saturday in front of a Syriac church in the Syria’s eastern city of Deir Ezzor.

 

The attack eroded a ceasefire which was brokered by UN envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi and took effect on Friday for Eid al-Adha.

While state news agency, SANA, said there were no casualties, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that five people were killed in the blast...

Russia accuses U.S. of coordinating and arming mercenaries in Syria- Pravda

 

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said "it is common knowledge Washington is aware of the delivery of various types of illegal weapons to illegal armed groups operating on Syrian territory." The Chief of Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Nikolai Makarov, said mercenaries in Syria possessed the US manufactured Stinger.

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich, on Thursday accused the government of the United States (U.S.) of coordinating the delivery of all types of weapons to the mercenaries in Syria, since last March, trying to topple President Bashar al Assad.

"It is common knowledge that Washington is aware of the delivery of various types of illegal weapons to armed groups operating on Syrian territory," said the Russian Foreign Minister.

''He added that U.S. officials and the press said Washington coordinates deliveries of missiles and provides logistical support to the supply chain."

Al-Qaida leader calls on Muslims to kidnap Westerners- Haaretz

In a two-hour and 12-minute video posted on Islamist websites on Wednesday, Ayman al-Zawahri also called U.S. President Barack Obama a 'liar' and 'one of the biggest supporters of Israel.'

 

Al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri has called on Muslims to kidnap Westerners, join Syria's rebellion and ensure Egypt implements Sharia law, SITE Monitoring reported, citing a two-part film posted on Islamist websites.

Syrian rebels ‘detain’ Lebanese reporter: TV- Daily Star

BEIRUT: Syrian rebels placed a Lebanese journalist "under house arrest" in the Aleppo district of Azaz, north Syria, LBCI reported Saturday.

 

The Lebanese television station quoted a statement from the group – the rebels of Azzaz –saying that they "detained Lebanese journalist Fidaa Itani ... because his work was not suitable with the course of the Syrian revolution and revolutionaries."

Syria fighting rages despite truce deal- Al-Jazeera

Syrian opposition activists have reported a return of heavy government bombardment in major cities, further undermining a truce intended to mark the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday.

 

Activists in the eastern city of Deir al-Zor, the suburbs of Damascus and in Aleppo, where rebels hold big swathes of territory, said mortar bombs were being fired into residential areas on Saturday morning.

Syria: 'Dozens' Dead Or Wounded In Blast- SKY News

Five people have been killed and thirty-two wounded in a car bomb attack in southern Damascus, according to state television.

The blast comes on the first day of a ceasefire brokered by UN and Arab League peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi.

The regime and the main rebel force, the Free Syrian Army, had both agreed to temporarily lay down their arms.

"The explosion of a booby-trapped car outside the Omar bin Khattab mosque in the Daf Shawk district killed and wounded dozens of people," the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The attack comes hours after three people were reported to have been killed by tank and sniper fire in Syria's capital the Damascus suburb of Harasta, which was apparently targeted in a violation of the temporary truce agreed to mark the four-day Muslim holiday of Eid Al Adha...

President al-Assad Performs Eid al-Adha Prayers at al-Afram Mosque in Damascus- SANA

DAMASCUS, (SANA)- President Bashar al-Assad on Friday morning performed Eid al-Adha Prayers at al-Afram Mosque in al-Muhajirin area in Damascus.

 

Senior officials of the state, a number of the People's Assembly members and the Grand Mufti of the Republic performed the Prayers along with President al-Assad, in addition to a number of scholars and a crowd of citizens.

 

Following the Prayers, the President listened to the Eid sermon, delivered by Sheikh Walid Abdul-Haq, which underscored the great meanings of Eid al-Adha.

 

Sheikh Abdul-Haq referred to the words of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) in the farewell sermon in which he called for regarding the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust.

 

"It's our responsibility today to respond to the message of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH)…which is to love each other," he added.

 

Sheikh Abdul-Haq stressed the need under the difficult circumstances to adhere to national unity as the enemies of the Arab and Islamic nation are seeking its division and elimination through sectarian sedition.

Syria Eid al-Adha ceasefire marred by clashes- BBC News

A series of clashes across Syria has disrupted a four-day ceasefire agreed to coincide with an Islamic holiday.

Violence appeared to die down as the ceasefire began at 06:00 (04:00 GMT).

But activists reported fighting in several cities, and later the army said it had implemented the truce but had responded to rebel "violations".

The capital Damascus was also hit by a car bomb, with unconfirmed claims by activists that there were a large number of casualties.

The truce was proposed by UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, who hopes it will lead to a peace process.

Syria Eid ceasefire broken as fighting erupts at army base - rights group- RT

 

Fighting has erupted in Syria in the first violation of a ceasefire honoring the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha, a human rights group said. Rebel fighters reportedly tried to storm a military base near a highway linking Damascus and Aleppo.

 

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that rebels had laid siege to a military base one kilometer from the highway, and that government forces had opened fire in a nearby village.

 

“Violent clashes started around 10:30 am (9:30 am Paris time) around the Wadi Deif base. The army responded by bombing the neighbouring village of Deir Sharqi. It is the first violation of the ceasefire,” Rami Abdul Rahman, the head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told AFP...

Combating the constant text messages from regime forces declaring them terrorists, rebels fight an information campaign, sending images of Aleppo's death and destruction worldwide.

 

The Syrian father thought he had enough dangers to contend with in his contested city of Aleppo. As darkness fell, sniper fire cracked repeatedly along the street outside. Explosions reverberated across the city.

 

Two nearby bombs that afternoon had cut off all electricity, so he was standing in the dark at the door of his apartment, children clustered around his feet, when his new neighbors arrived, working their way up the interior stairwell with the light of their mobile phones – and bearing a satellite dish.

 

But this wasn’t just another family, traumatized by three months of fighting here between the Assad regime and the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA). It was a small group of rebel media activists, college-aged and determined to use photographs and video to show the result of indiscriminate artillery and aircraft bombardment in Aleppo.

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 25, ARMENPRESS. Contrary to the peaceful situation in Aleppo lasting already several days today a heavy shooting was heard in the morning. Spokesman of the National Primacy of Aleppo Jirayr Reisyan said this in a conversation with "Armenpress" adding that the rebels attempted to penetrate into several districts, where a lot of Armenians live. Reisyan also added that even now one can hear shooting, but there is no information about the damage or human casualties. The Army does its best to repulse the rebels.

 

Talking about the clashes in Ashrafie district Reisyan said that there are few Armenians living there and that one of the most peaceful districts is now engaged in violent clashes. As to the New Village district, then the most dangerous there are snipers, but fortunately there are no casualties yet.

 

The humanitarian aid from Armenia to Syria is still in the airport and they are doing everything to take it out of there...

Rebel Troops Take Two Christian and One Kurdish Neighborhood Thursday Morning (Oct 25, 2012)-Syria Comment

Reports from friends inside suggest that Aleppo is falling to rebel troops. Both major Christian areas – al-Syriaan al-Jadide and al-Syriaan al-Qadime have fallen. The regime’s largest Mukhabarat station is in the second area. FSA sharpshooters have gone to the tops of all buildings in these areas with no government opposition. The major Kurdish neighborhood – Ashrafiya – gave no resistance. The government had been counting on the Kurds to hold back the FSA fighters. If opposition troops can hold these neighborhoods in the center of town, it is bad news for the government. Regime seems to have cut it loose. (Correction at 3:oo SET – Syrian Army tanks appeared on al-Faisal street, the main thoroughfare of Aleppo that runs along al-Syiriyaan al-Jadide, causing the rebels to make a “tactical” retreat back into the Ashrafiyya neighborhood. This is what I am being told by Aleppine friends who are on the phone with relatives inside both these areas. They put sharpshooters on top of their buildings. One said the family’s Filipino maid fainted due to the loud shooting earlier in the day. People are terrified that the regime may try to strike with airplanes. For now (7:00 Eastern S. Time), an eerie silence has settled over the city. Where will the government try to hold the line?

 

Addendum: (3:30 pm EST) Government tanks were moved into Faisal street, the main thurowfair running the length of al-Syriaan al-Jadide and Qadime. Rebel troops made a tactical retreat back into the Kurdish neighborhood of Ashrafiyya.

 

It seems that the Kurds of Ashrafiyya changed their attitude toward the rebels, taking a neutral stand and allowing them through to temporarily spread into the Christian neighborhoods mentioned above. The superiority of Gov tanks means that the rebels remain diffident about taking on the Government troops directly.

 

Here is an email from one friend: (6:00 am EST) “I just got a frantic call from sister in Aleppo. The city of aleppo has largely fallen into rebel hands. They took over syrian jdide overnight. They are minutes from our house. As i have been for a while, this appears over”

 

Good reports estimate that rebel troops number (correction: 40,000 in city. Regime cannot devote troops in that number. They are trying to impress as many young men into the army as they can. But most young men are staying home and hiding from conscription.

 

Addendum: (11:00 am EST) A high rebel commander claims that the government troops in Aleppo do not exceed 6,000. The Shabiha are 2,000 and rebel troops are close to 40,000. He says the 70,000 number I had published earlier was an exaggeration. This commander is close to the top of the FSA command and planning...

Syria rebels take over Aleppo Kurdish area, seize army post- Ahram Online

Syrian rebel forces took over a strategically important Kurdish neighbourhood in Aleppo and seized a military post in the country's northeast on Thursday, residents and a watchdog said.

As observers waited to see if President Bashar al-Assad's regime will accept the proposal for a ceasefire during the Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha, residents in Aleppo's northern Ashrafiyeh district told AFP about 200 rebels had moved in to the area for the first time.

 

"I saw armed men enter my street with Dushka (heavy machineguns) mounted on their vehicles, where it was written 'Liwa al-Tawhid,'" a 28-year-old resident told AFP, referring to the Free Syrian Army's (FSA) main unit in the embattled city.

 

"Snipers have set up in the buildings and 50 armed men, dressed in black and wearing headbands with Islamic slogans, entered a school near me. I heard them tell the residents: 'We are here to spend Eid with you'," he said.

 

"I am waiting for things to calm down before leaving," he said.

 

Eid al-Adha begins on Friday and UN-Arab League peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has said the regime in Damascus is ready to follow his call for a ceasefire during the four-day holiday.

 

The regime has said it will confirm Thursday whether it accepts the truce, while the main rebel forces say they will cease fire only if regime troops do so first.

 

Northern Aleppo's neighbouring Kurdish districts of Ashrafiyeh and Sheikh Maqsud have been controlled by local militia and the move marked the first time either rebel or government forces had moved into the area.

 

Ashrafiyeh is strategically important as it sits on city heights and is a route between the central and northern parts of the country's commercial capital, which has been the theatre of intense fighting between rebels and government troops since mid-July...

Şam yakınlarında bulunan Katana'daki St. Elias Kilisesi'nin pastörü Fadi Cemil Haddad, Şam'ın Ceramana bölgesinde ölü bulundu. Vatikan'ın resmi haber ajansı Agenzia Fides'in haberine göre, rahibin cesedinin bulunduğu bölge, geçtiğimiz Cuma günü kimliği belirlenemeyen silahlı gruplar tarafından kaçırıldığı yere yakın. Haddad'ın bir meslektaşı, öldürülen rahibin cesedinin "korkunç bir şekilde işkenceye" maruz kaldığını söyledi.

 

Suriye Devlet Ajansı da, Haddad'ın başında bir kurşun yarası bulunduğunu iddia etti. Agenzia Fides'e konuşan ve ismini açıklamak istemeyen bir rahip, Haddad'ın gözlerinin oyulduğunu söyledi.

A source at the Roman Orthodox Patriarchate in Damascus on Thursday said the body of Father Fadi Haddad was found near Drousha area on Damascus-Quneitra highway, sustaining a gunshot wound to the head.

 

The source noted that the terrorists kidnapped Father Haddad last Thursday in Artouz town while he was seeking the release of a kidnapped person from the hands of terrorists.

Burada çok önemli bir muhalif kitle var, İstanbul cafelerinde onlarla buluşup görüştüm. Muhalifler çoğunlukla Türkiye’ye sıcak bakıyor. Ama kimileri de Türkiye’nin bütün desteği ve yardımını Müslüman Kardeşler’e verip diğer muhalif grupları dışladığından şikayet ediyor. Batılı güçler Suriye Ulusal Konseyi’ni muhattap almaktan vazgeçti. Türkiye ve Katar, Konsey’de ısrar ediyor. Fakat Konsey’in içindeki iktidar kavgasından inandırıcı bir siyasi vizyon çıkmıyor. Siyasi meseleler neredeyse hiç konuşulmuyor. Esas soru şu; muhalefet kendi kontrolündeki yerlerde ekonomik ve sosyal hayatın sürdürülmesini sağlayabilecek mi? Siyasi liderlik sergilemek zorundalar. Önümüzdeki birkaç ay içinde durum bence belli olacak. Mevcut çatışma seviyesinde Suriye hükümeti yıllarca savaşabilir. Fakat muhalefet halkı ikna edemezse işte o zaman kaybederler.

Muhalefete yardım için askeri müdahale ihtimali şu anda nedir?

 Batı’nın müdahale etme olasılığı şu anda ölü. Yaklaşık bir yıldır buna inanıyorum. Katar ve Suudi Arabistan’ın uçuşa yasak bölge yaratacak bir askeri kapasitesi bile yok. Türk ordusu kısmen bu güce sahip. Ama Suriye’ye girerse doğrudan Esad’ın ordusuyla savaşmak zorunda kalacak. Türkiye’de siyasi ve askeri bütün yetkililerin tek başına gerçekleştirilecek bir operasyonu istemediğine kesinlikle ikna olmuş durumdayım...

Breakingnes’in haberine göre Zehran Alluş liderliğindeki Liva el-İslam adlı silahlı gruba mensup militanlar, Şam yakınlarındaki Duma bölgesinde 13 sivili öldürdü.

Boğazı kesilerek öldürülmüş halde bulunan kişilerden 9’unun erkek, 3’ünün çocuk birin de kadın olduğu açıklandı.

Four Citizens Martyred, 11 Injured by Terrorist Explosion in al-Tadamun, Damascus- SANA

DAMASCUS, (SANA)- Terrorists blew up a booby-trapped car in a crowded street in al-Tadamun popular neighborhood in Damascus on Wednesday.

 

"Initial toll of the terrorist explosion refers to 4 martyrs while 11 others injured from the civilians," A source at the Interior Ministry told SANA.

 

It added that the explosion caused grave material damages in the houses and shops of citizens.

 

Another source at the National Hospital of Damascus told SANA reporter that the hospital received the bodies of 4 martyrs in addition to 10 people injured, one of them in a critical condition.

Syrian conflict part of Mideast ’geopolitical game’ – Lavrov- Voltaire.net

Some countries are apparently interested in fueling violence in Syria as part of a “geopolitical remapping” of the Middle East, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

 

“It appears that every time the hope for progress in the Syrian situation arises, somebody attempts to prevent it from calming down and deliberately fuels the continuation of the bloodshed and civil war in Syria,” Lavrov said in an interview with Rossiiskaya Gazeta on Monday.

 

Lavrov cited some unspecified opposition groups as telling Russia that Western countries urge them to continue the resistance, “to fight for their rights with arms until [President Bashar al-Assad’s] regime falls.”

YDH-Özgür Suriye Ordusu komutanlarından Albay Ahmet Hicazi, Suriye yönetimi ateşkese uysa dahi kendilerinin ateşkese uymayacağını açıkladı.

Selefi Şeyh Adnan Arur öncülüğünde kurulan Devrimci Askeri Konseyleri Ortak Komutanlığı, ateşkese şartlı "evet" derken Özgür Suriye Ordusu'nun üst düzey komutanlarından Albay Ahmet Hicazi, "rejim ateşkese bağlı kalsa da biz bağlı kalmayacağız" dedi.

Katar Emiri Hamas’ın davetiyle Gazze’ye gidiyor- Sol Haber

Katar Emiri Şeyh Hamad el Tani’nin yarın Gazze’yi ziyaret edileceği bildirildi. Davetin bir süre önce Şam’daki siyasi bürosunu Doha’ya taşıyan Hamas’ın çağrısı üzerine gerçekleşeceği ileri sürüldü.

 

Hamas’a yakın Şihab Haber Ajansı, Katar Emiri Şeyh Hamad bin Halifa el Tani’nin yarın Gazze’ye bir ziyaret gerçekleştireceğini bildirdi. Emirin 2007’de Gazze Hamas’ın kontrolüne girdiğinden bu yana bölgeyi ziyaret eden ilk Arap devlet başkanı olacağı belirtiliyor.

 

Ajansa konuşan, ismi açıklanmayan bir Hamas yetkilisi, Katar Emiri’nin salı günü Gazze’ye gelerek bazı projelerin açılışına katılacağını ifade etti. Öte yandan Hamas’tan ziyaretle ilgili resmi bir açıklama yapılmış değil. Ancak AFP’ye konuşan bir Filistinli yetkili, Katarlıların Filistin Devlet Başkanı Mahmud Abbas’la Gazze ziyareti konusunda görüştüğünü söyledi...
