High ranking rebel commander killed by infighting in East Ghouta- Al-Masdar News


BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:50 P.M.) – A high ranking commander from Faylaq Al-Rahman was reportedly killed inside the East Ghouta town of Zamalka this morning after a short battle with Jaysh Al-Islam militants.
Abu Najib, the Faylaq Al-Rahman commander, was identified by East Ghouta activists as the dead leader of this Islamist group in rural Damascus.
Abu Najib was reportedly the office manager of Faylaq Al-Rahman before he was caught between the infighting in Zamalka.
The rebel infighting has recently claimed more than 100 dead over the last 72 hours, leaving Jaysh Al-Islam and Faylaq Al-Rahman at odds once again.

Hundreds of Syrian Army soldiers pour into Palmyra for new offensive- Al-Masdar News



BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:55 A.M.) – Hundreds of soldiers from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) arrived in the Palmyra countryside yesterday, a military source told Al-Masdar News this morning.

The soldiers were reportedly deployed from the coastal provinces of Tartous and Latakia to the Palmyra front, where they are expected to aid the 5th Legion in a new military operation around this ancient desert city.

While details of this military operation were not given, it is very likely that the Syrian Arab Army will push east of Palmyra towards the strategic town of Al-Sukhnah.

Al-Sukhnah is a strategic town located along the main highway to the Deir Ezzor Governorate; if captured, it will allow the Syrian Arab Army to possibly end the two year long siege on the province.

Tomahawk missile strike on Syria was ‘after-dinner entertainment’- US commerce secretary- RT

The 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles the US launched against Syria last month was just “after-dinner entertainment,” which “did not cost the president anything,” the US commerce secretary said, while President Trump called the attack a “tough decision.”

US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross delivered the controversial comments while speaking at the Milken Institute Global Conference on Monday, according to Variety.

US President Donald Trump’s executive order to launch an attack on a Syrian military airfield on April 7 in response to an alleged chemical attack in the town of Khan Shaykhun, which killed around 80 people on April 4, was apparently just “after-dinner entertainment,” according to Ross. The missile volley killed at least 14 people, including nine civilians.

Al-Rahi Advises Officials to 'Avoid Extension, Vacuum'- Naharnet

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi advised political parties on Tuesday to reach a new voting system for the upcoming parliamentary polls and avoid an extension of the parliament’s term or vacuum at the legislative authority.

90 insurgents killed as Jaish Al-Islam storms rival Islamist stronghold in rural Damascus- Al-Masdar News

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (11:25 P.M.) – Amid increased tensions in the East Ghouta, Jaish Al-Islam stormed and entered Zamalka to dislodge Failaq Al-Rahman (FSA) militants from the town, located on the eastern fringes of the Syrian capital.
Utilizing heavy weaponry and tanks, Jaish Al-Islam entered the northeastern part of the FSA stronghold and engaged Failaq Al-Rahman who subsequently called upon Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) to stiffen their defenses.
With HTS reinforcements flooding into the town, heavy clashes erupted in Zamalka especially in the evening hours.

New Hamas Document Accepts Palestinian State with 1967 Borders- Naharnet

Hamas on Monday unveiled a new policy document easing its stance on Israel after having called for years for the country's destruction, as the Palestinian Islamist movement seeks to improve its international standing.
The move comes ahead of a first face-to-face meeting on Wednesday between U.S. President Donald Trump and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whose Fatah party remains deeply divided from Hamas.
The document was unveiled in the Qatari capital Doha by exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal, who is due to step down soon after serving his maximum two terms.
The press conference was also broadcast live in the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian enclave controlled by Hamas, and the document was posted on the movement's website.
"We in Hamas believe that renewal and reinvention is a necessity," Meshaal said at the conference in a Doha hotel.
While the new document does not amount to recognition of Israel as demanded by the international community, Hamas officials say, it formally softens its stance in a few key areas.

U.S.-backed militias oust Islamic State from Syria's Tabqa old city- Reuters

U.S.-backed militias said on Monday they had pushed Islamic State fighters out of the old quarters of Tabqa, a strategically vital town controlling Syria's largest dam, hemming the militants into the remaining modern district along the shore.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance made up of Syrian Kurdish and Arab fighting groups, are fighting a multi-phased campaign to drive Islamic State from its stronghold of Raqqa, 40km (25 miles) downstream and east of Tabqa.

The SDF will wait to assault Raqqa until it seizes Tabqa, its military officials have previously said, but it had made slow progress since besieging the town in early April.

This changed on Thursday when the SDF began to advance north into the old city.

On Monday the SDF said in an online statement it had taken the last three neighborhoods of the old city and an adjoining industrial district.

SDF forces were now fighting Islamic State in the three modern quarters of the town which lie along the Tabqa reservoir, SDF spokesman Talal Silo said.

Seven Grenades Explode Overnight in Ain el-Hilweh Camp- Naharnet

Seven grenade bomb explosions were heard in the southern refugee camp of Ain el-Hilweh late on Sunday and early on Monday without any casualties being reported, the National News Agency reported.
One grenade exploded at 10:30 pm on Sunday inside the said camp at the junction of the vegetable market in Hay al-Tiri. It was followed by another bomb after almost one hour, NNA said.
The third bomb was tossed at 12:30 am. Four other grenades followed until 4:00 am.
No casualties were reported, it added.

US-backed fighters have captured 80 percent of Syria's Tabqa from the Islamic State group, a monitor said on Monday, a week after they first entered the town.
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) broke into Tabqa from the south last week and have steadily advanced north, cornering IS in three contiguous neighbourhoods on the bank of the Euphrates River.
The strategic town of Tabqa sits on a supply route about 55 kilometres (35 miles) west of Raqa city, the de facto capital of IS territory in Syria.
At dawn, IS fighters withdrew from the western-most district towards the other two quarters, said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
"The SDF now controls more than 80 percent of Tabqa," Abdel Rahman said.
"In the whole town, IS only holds those two neighbourhoods, known locally as the first and second quarters," he told AFP.

Syria: East Ghouta Turns on Itself, Again (Aron Lund- The Century Foundation)

Yet again, infighting between the opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has played straight into his hands. On April 28, yet another violent chapter was opened in the slow-rolling collapse of the insurgency around the Syrian capital, in a region known as the East Ghouta.

Early in 2016, this suburban-rural enclave broke apart in chaotic infighting, leaving hundreds of rebel combatants dead at the hands of their supposed brothers-in-arms and dividing the local insurgency neatly down the middle. The result was as predictable as it was disastrous for the insurgency: since then, Assad’s government has retaken around half of the enclave’s territory.

A year later to the day, the rebels have returned to fighting amongst themselves. If the renewed internecine conflict between Islamist insurgent groups is not brought under control, it may well give the Syrian government what it needs to finally crush the last rebel enclave near Damascus.
