Syrian Kurdish fighters say they have taken the strategic town of Tal Abyad, a major supply route to al-Raqqa province, a stronghold of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Syria.
Redur Khalil, a spokesperson of Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), told the Associated Press news agency earlier on Monday that Kurdish units had encircled Tal Abyad from three sides, with the Turkish border the only remaining outlet.
"Our advance is slow because there is a large concentration of Daesh forces inside the town and because of the large numbers of mines and booby traps they planted on the road," he said, using an alternative acronym for ISIL.
He said fighting was now concentrated in the eastern districts of Tal Abyad.
