General Staff reveals details of drones that attacked Russian bases in Syria- TASS

MOSCOW, January 11. /TASS/. The analysis of terrorists’ drones captured in Syria has shown that they cannot be made in an improvised manner, head of the Russian General Staff's department for the development of unmanned aerial vehicles Maj. Gen. Alexander Novikov said.

"The creation of drones of this class is impossible in an improvised manner. Their development and usage involved specialists, who had undergone special training in the countries manufacturing and using systems with unmanned aerial vehicles," the general said.

The assembly and usage of unmanned aerial vehicles is a difficult engineering task that demands "special training, know-how in various scientific areas and practical experience in creating these devices," he said.

Special software is also needed to use these drones, the general noted. For efficient usage of ammunition information on exact target location and such parameters as altitude, flight and wind speed is required. This information cannot be obtained from the Internet, Novikov stressed.

Opposition Not 'Totally Ruling Out' Participation in Sochi Conference: Hariri- The Syrian Observer

Lead opposition negotiator offers signals possible involvement in the Russian track, but says achieving progress in Geneva would make Sochi pointless.

The head of the Syrian opposition delegation told the AFP news agency that the new round of United Nations-led peace talks on Syria will take place in Geneva on Jan. 21.

Hariri said that the U.N. will remain the most qualified party to oversee the efforts to reach a political solution in Syria, in an implicit reference to the talks which Russia has called for on the Jan. 29 and 30 in Sochi.

Regarding the Sochi negotiations, Hariri said the opposition has not received any official invitation and is unsure of the real aim Russia is working toward with the talks.

He added that the United Nations has not yet taken a decision to take part in the Sochi conference, noting that the Syrian opposition “is not totally ruling out” attending, but it believes that achieving progress in the coming Geneva talks will render the Sochi meeting pointless.

According to Hariri, the United Nations will not participate in Sochi unless Russia’s talks support the Geneva process.

The veteran opposition figure said that he met on Monday in New York with the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman.

Turkey urges Russia, Iran to stop Syrian army offensive in Idlib- Reuters

As pro-government forces pressed the assault, the Russian defense ministry’s newspaper said Moscow had asked the Turkish military to tighten control over armed groups in Idlib. It said militants had used the province as the launchpad for a drone attack on two Russian bases in the last week.

Idlib has become a focal point of the Syrian war as government forces and allied militia have thrust toward an insurgent-held air base. Idlib, bordering Turkey, is the largest single chunk of Syria still under the control of rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad.
